Joint account advice

Hello.

This is my first post after using this great website for months.

I've just bought a house and plan to open a joint account with the missus for mortgage repayment and bills. So at least £1200 will be enterring and leaving the account each month.

We're both still using separate personal accounts for our wages and just need a reliable account that we can access via the web and not slap us with huge fees if we go overdrawn (unlikely, but could happen).

Any advice on who I should open one with?

I've read Martin's guide and a few others online about current accounts, so any personal advice is appreciated. Cheers!

    hiya,

Im with halifax and Bf with TSB but we opened a halifax joint account about 4 months ago. we can access it fully online and transfers were set up no problem, and they automatically gave us £250 overdraft incase we did go over..

It seems really good so far, no problems anyway!

The two banks that are consistently described as giving good service are Smile and First Direct. Both are on-line. I have made extensive use of both of them, and recommend them both. I prefer Smile, partly because of their ethical banking, however First Direct are much better at answering the telephone. (With both of them, most of your communication is by secure electronic message but at times you need an immediate answer: in that situation First Direct has the edge.) However, don't forget that Smile has a free wine offer...
  • HALifax have just opened their new high interest account if you're paying in over £1000 a month. We use HSBC and have done for 17 years, there's never enough money in there to worry about interest and changing all those direct debits would be a lot of hassle.
Alliance and leicester are offering a £1000 overdraft for the first year and you can get money for being referred.First Direct are due to start charging £10 a month soon, so even though my personal current account is with them I wouldn't open one with them right now.
  • Thanks everyone. First Direct seem good and they answered the phone in seconds when I called. (But then that was their 'new accounts' line, but still it's a good sign).
