Re-locating sunflower seedlings

a few weeks ago i planted some sunflower seeds and they are now at the seedling stage. Problem is i'm stripping out the border that they are in and wish to locate them in my front garden. Is this possible? if so how can i do it without harming them?

Yes it is but there is a chance if you dig to shallow or too near the roots it may kill the plant

Also if you do transplant might be best when its out of the sun for a few days to give plant a chance to recover

I tend to grow them in pot

I have some sunflowers growing from accidental seedings...in other words, from bird seed that the birds spat out here and here in the garden. As these sunflowers started to grow in my raised beds and plant pots that i am growing veg in, i moved them out without very much care or attention and potted them up in some smallish plastic pots and they are thriving. I wouldn't worry to much, if mine are anything to go by, they are quite fine with being moved.

    Hi,
is there still time to plant sunflowers from seed?
I had a thougth about raiding my bird food supply when I saw your post above!
If I were to do it, should I remove the ouer black husk and plant the white seed or leave it on?

you can still plant them now, you can leave them with the husks on they don't usually cause any problems

Thank you, I've just done that.
Put in pots first. Left in potting shed which has a clear roof.
    I havent got a greenhouse.
I'll plant them out when they are about 4 inches high, would that be right?

Here is a pic i took this evening, of the sunflower seedlings i rather carelessly dug up and chucked in pots, to remove them from my veggie beds.

Mine are just outside on the patio, they have grown from seed outside in my veggie beds, so they are well hardy!

Update!!! I planted them as stated , with husks on, and they are now about an inch tall! Woohoo! that was quick.
It feels good, I usually buy all my plants, Ive never grown from seed before.
I think I'll leave it another two weeks and then put them in the garden with stakes.
