Housing benefit confusion

i've just been awarded housing benefit, with back pay as i was wrongly advised by the cab that i wasn't entited to it,
i've also just recieved a back pay sum from tax credits as they underpaid me last year
as i have money in savings, this now means i have over £6000 which they state i must declare, but it won't be there for long as i have bills i need to pay.
i don't want to get on the wrong side of them, do i have to tell them? or do i just pay my bills without telling them?
thanks for ay help

What bills do you have to pay? How miuch over will you be?

You do need to inform them, but if you then go under £6,000 due to paying day to day bills that should not be a problem.
    Gone ... or have I?

If the arrears from TC are notified to the authority, it will be used as capital. If it is spent in normal ways such as paying back debts etc, this wont' cause a problem but for the period that you have money over £6k in the bank, HB will add £1 per week to your weekly income for every £250 you have over the limit.
I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.

it will be gone by middle of next week, well back well below the limit, as i've done bacs transfers to pay off what i owe. so its not even going to be over for a full week, its just as my bank stands now between savings and the current account balance its all been paid into it's over £6000 if you add it up. if tax credits or housing had back paid me next week wouldn't have been a issue its just as both have gone in together on the same day,
