I guess I will be hearing from the IR in April? How will I be expected to pay tax back, e.g. by cheque?
However are you sure that you owe them money. It would be unusual for the payroll system to allow you to earn more than your personal allowance regardless of a P38 or not.

the people who suggest filling in a p38 just for the sake of it are wrong, its an offense, ok its unlikely to be picked up but even so.
Would simply be easier to fill in p45/46 and then be given the 4500 tax code, if you earn more than this your employer will often credit it back the next week you earn below the threshold. Else the tax man will take it, when you leave job or april whichever is sooner, ring em up/write and ask for it back, if you wait till april they will do it all for you and you get a nice cheque off the IR, remember this incident, it will never happen again!! only demands!
I know it seems like a chunk out your wages but its a nice lump sump to receive in april, just when the student loan is dwindling, and you need study books! Yes its 0% interest on it, but it is too at the pub where you would spend it! If your a first year student it comes at the ideal time when you need a lump sump to pay your housing deposit.
NI, you simply don't get back, unless you get surgery or lots of pills etc..
