Gas supply advice

Good afternoon, I am hoping someone can offer me some guidance as to what I should do. Approx five years ago I puchased and refurbished my home. As part of the refurb, a new gas meter was installed. About three months after the meter was installed someone came and read the meter. I was a little concerned after six months that I had not received any bill. I contacted the company who installed my meter and was told I need to speak to my gas supplier - I told them I didn't know who the supplier is and that I never entered into a contract with anyone - they also stated that they did not know who is supplying us. I called several gas companies - all stated that they were not supplying me with gas, but would if I gave them my suppliers name so that they could take it over!

I am lost as to know what to do, I am very conscious of the fact that I have not paid a gas bill in five years - believe me I have tried. I am very concerned as to what to do, as obviously it could end up being quite a large bill. Does anybody have any ideas on what I should do.

I apologise for this being so long. Many thanks in advance.

call 0870 608 1524 to see if registered gas supplier if not on the national grid data base, is there a label on it with a name of an independent gas transporter on it

but a couple of questions was it a new build when you moved in and did the builder arrange for meter to be installed ?

or did you arrange to have meter installed ?

  • Hi,
I will check if there is an label on it when I get home tonight. No-one seems to be interested, you would think that someone would want to take payment for the gas used!

It was a refurb, which I needed the gas meter to be moved, so they installed a new one. I arranged it myself, paid for the meter to be disconnected and a new one to be connected by Transco, which cost be approx £1,200.00.

The property was derelict previously, so no record of gas supplier when I purchased.

Thank you for responding, much appreciated.

ah all becomes clear so when you did property up there was no gas being used for a while before that, then you bought it, did it up and started to use gas - fine, if you did not register at time of moving in and the onus is on you to do so, and if the property had been empty for a length of time there many not be a registered gas supplier - check as I advised previously and if neither provide you with details you need to choose a supplier of choose and register but you MUST check first so you can advise supplier properly that you have taken steps to find out.

There are various posts in this section on what happens regarding for bill for the gas you have used whilst with out a supplier so to say.
