Why do dual carriageways have 2 lanes?

Today I got stuck in a massive (5mile +) traffic jam on the dual carriageway I use on my daily commute.

The left hand lane was hardly moving and the right hand lane was almost empty (typical British queuing mentality), so I head off down the right hand lane only to be confronted by sausage jockey's straddling the two lanes...... Lucky for them (and their no claims discount) I had space to squeeze past.

I eventually drove the entire distance in the right hand lane until I got to my destination (where I needed the right hand lane for a traffic island anyway).
There was no road block, no accident, no nothing.... Just a bunch of idiots using one lane instead of two, JUST because it was moving slowly.

The resulting tailback was (if you think about it) twice as long as it needed to be and it was blocking the main ring road for an entire town simply because people love to queue.

We need to see changes is the highway code to do away with this sort of congestion causing driving mentality! Start/stop driving is highly uneconomical, so why volunteer for it?

If we weren't meant to use both lanes, they wouldn't be dual carriageways! What's the point?

I guess most drivers must have assumed it was because of a lane closure ahead, and got into lane. Not that they needed to, even then.

I wouldnt complain, I'd rather fools queue in one lane allowing me to freely use the other than be confronted by 2 blocked lanes ;)

People driving in the middle lane when there is nothing on the left lane is what annoys me the most.

Yes in a way it would have been great if not for the "good citizens" who straddle two lanes to prevent people overtaking them.....

I can't say I've ever seen people do that, sounds really dangerous. The first time someone runs into the back of them will probably be the last time they do it.

The outside lane of dual carriageways, or motorways, is the BMW lane. The inside lanes are for the peasants. At least that's the impression I got on the M60 last week.

I had a van driver do this to me once, blocked the right hand empty lane, so I moved in to the space he was in the left hand and wouldn't let him back in.

He then startedweaving in and out v close to my car, I had my 3 year old son in the back and the Mrs in the passenger seat, I was not too pleased about this and was ready to get out. But I thought no point as he could have a weapon and don't know what state of mind he could be in, so instead I was so furious-I cut him up BIG style and made him come to a stop-very much like the Police performing a manoeuvre to get a car to stop.

I then just drove off, the situation could of changed however luckily it didn't.

I just don't understand some other drivers mentality?

Is it just other driver's mentality you don't understand?

Why were you driving so recklessly with "3 year old son in the back and the Mrs in the passenger seat"?

Oh don't get me wrong, I have no issue slamming into the side of someone's car if they do this.... I did this a few years ago and ripped his mirror/front wing clean off, but It's just a pain losing your car for 3 weeks while his insurance company drags theirs !!!!!! sorting out the repairs!
