Removing the Ash tree

Hi,

I have a rather large ash tree in my garden and would like to take it down. It's roots have spread all over the garden and it's hiding three very beautiful tree's behind it.

Does anyone have any tips to removing the stump easily? I have been told there are some sort of crystals to put into the stump to kill it off, although I'm not sure what they are. Googling has confused somewhat!

Thank you!

First things first, are you allowed to remove it or are you in a tree conservation area? Find out as it can be expensive if you fell it and find out later when you are taken to court for breach of a TPO.
Even if it is though you can fell it with permission if it is, a non native species, causing a problem – loss of light, danger to buildings etc. Poisonous and there is a risk to children, pets or livestock.

Also, if and when you do remove/chop down the Ash tree, you might want to think about offering the logs on your local Freegle group. Ash is a very good wood for use in woodwork (carving or woodturning) - my husband is a woodturner and he's made some lovely items from Ash. You'd be amazed how many people will be willing to come and collect the logs.

The tree isn't in any conservation area, have done extensive research prior to thinking of felling it. Would rather keep the tree than pay the huge fine! Thanks for the warning though.

You are welcome, I have seen people fall foul of this and my dad used to advise folk how to get round it.

Maybe this link will help http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/Profile.aspx?pid=229 RHS are pretty good in my opinion.

Adouglasmhor Thank you, is a very helpful page.

EmptyPockets, I have sort of hoped to make a bench out of it for the garden already. But if there is any left i'll keep it in mind.

    Thanks again for the help.

Crystals will stop regrowth by you'll wait years for the stump to decay. Best hire in a chap with a stump grinder and it'll be done in 15 minutes.

I use something called 'tough week and stump killer'. It's a pack of crystals so that's probably what you are looking for.

You could burn the stump if there is nothing else nearby.

I had an Ash removed last year and they ground out the stump. You'd never know there was ever a tree there now!
