Advice on opening a US dollar bank account at a US bank

Hi,

I need to be able to have ACH debits from a US financial institution and therefore I'm looking to open a bank account with a US bank.

Aside from the difficulties re identification etc a big issue for me is that lots of US banks charge to accept deposits to your account - up to 5% in some cases and $30 per transaction with others.

As I may want to use this account for eBay selling of low cost items, this will make it prohibitive.

Would anyone be able to offer advice about this please?

Jackie

Any Branch of Bank Of America will open a current account for a UK citizen with just a passport as ID, just go in and see an advisor (If they have BOA in the State you are visiting)

NO charges for deposits, minimum balance of $800 US for fee free banking,

You get a Visa DEbit Card in branch when you open the account and they are happy to post statements to the UK at no charge, they even provide a mail address to mail in US$ Cheque or Money orders if you get any sent to the UK

And of course decent online banking

Have had accounts with them for over 15 years, and found them by far the best for a UK citizen needing a cheap account in the US.

I have had accounts in Florida and Nevada & California, but they are in about 20 states, you may find it easier dealing with a branch in a Visitor based state like Fl or NV. but all branchs can do it and a call to customer services can get them the details they need to overide the Tax ID and other Credit checking fields on the system

It may be worth contacting your UK bank and asking them if they can help you open an account in the US. Most big banks in the UK have some sort of arrangement with a US bank (or own one!) - for instance, HSBC UK can help you open one with HSBC USA.

Haven't come across US banks charging to accept deposits to a personal account..
