No need to throw your toys out of the pram, You came on here to ask advice, everyone has an opinion and is entitled to offer it. Personal abuse and insults help no one.

So saying I wont love my dogs or have time of the day for them if I had a chaild isnt personal insult? I came on for advice yes.. not snotty opinions
  • I had 2 dogs and my life revolved around them
I had a baby and within 3 months both dogs were at the vet for their final injection
OK - they were getting a bit old (The collie was 19 and the Doberman was 14) but once you cannot imagine the love and protection you feel toward a baby until you have had one

The good thing about Lhasas (I had one in the 80's ) is that they don't live much beyond 8-10 years

If of course you would put your dogs before any children then perhaps you shouldn't have children

PS - If you don't want to hear constructive advice then don't ask for it

this sounds like you put your dogs down because of your child???? mmmhh

and I never said I would put dogs before any child they will be treat the same as if I didnt have one. They are loved and part of me and ok I wont have much time on my hands having a family as well but it wont change the way I feel towards my dogs.. and as for constructive critisicm.. this isnt it!! Its people stating WHAT I WILL FEEL if I had a family.. how will you all know this?? ok yes I will feel tremendous amount of love and protection towards a child but I am not so shallow to neglect my dogs because of this! I can take advice etc but what you call CC isnt.. its insulting
  • What an unnecessary post! What exactly is the constructive advice? Get rid of the dogs because when a baby comes along they will immediately have to be put down?? What rubbish......
(from someone with 2 dogs and 3 kids!)

thanks sunday_girl... someone else who saw my point!! :T
  • Sorry sweetie not a troll just p*ssed off with people seeking advice and then getting all huffy when it's offered

Why don't they just go to massagemyego.com or encouragemeinmyfoolishways.com

ego?? what ego? if I had such a thing I wouldnt be on here admitting to the amount of debt I am in!! laughable:D
  • With regard to the dog grooming: yes, dog grooming training centres do "model night" reduced price grooming for training students; however, given that show Lhasas aren't clipped anyway, and so there's no "wrong" way to do it, I think that if you can cut your own hair you would be able to cut the dogs' hair. It will always grow back if you don't get it quite right first time! I have two poodles which I trim myself, and I learnt how to do it by doing it, though an experienced person did show me first. Poodles need clipping with proper electric clippers which cost around £100 (still works out a lot cheaper than paying someone else to do it once a month or so!) but you could probably keep Lhasa coats under control with a good pair of hairdressing scissors. Would the dogs' breeder be able to show you how to go about things at first? It would free up quite a bit of money for you if you managed to cut back on grooming costs, surely? good luck.

I thought about buying some proper clippers and doing it.. I am a member of a lhasa forum and the best breeders and showers are on here, they have given me excellent advice on how to maintain their coats I just darent!!! But you are right there is only a couple of weeks between a good and a bad haircut.. so I might just miss the next couple of grooms (£100) and get them clippers bought!!!! many thanks xxx

Oooohhh trod on a big fat toe there didn't I sweetie

I just put my kids before my dogs that's all - nothing wrong with that is there

There's nothing wrong with putting the kids before the dogs... but most people manage to have both kids and dogs living together quite happily.

What I can't believe is how anyone can have their dogs put down just because they now have a child!?!

totally inhuman.. maybe the poster meant to say.. they dogs had to be put down with old age 3 months after their child was born but the way it came across was that the dogs were just .. PUT DOWN.. and their old age wasnt the reason..
    poor soles.
my dogs mean the world to me.. my life revolves around them and ok when and if i have a family... that child will come first but it wont stop me loving my dogs. I know it wont.
    xx
  • Delightfuldior - Please ignore the ignorant. They obviously have never known love like that you get from pets. I am fully with you on the dog front.
I used to be a vet nurse and our vets ran a kind of insurance scheme.. obviously, I don't know if there's a vets near you that does anything similar, but it went something like this..
You pay a monthly premium and when the dogs needed treatment, you just pay for the first 2 consults (the meds, etc were 'free') and the yearly vaccines were given free. I think that there might have also been a discount on the flea & worm treatment.
As I said tho, I don't know if there's any schemes like that in your area and whether it would be cost-effective if your dogs were in good health.
I realise that specialist dog food can be very expensive - is it just a wheat allergy that you (or rather your dog) are dealing with? There are many cheaper options that just use basic chicken and natural ingredients without any wheat in.
Anyways, whatever you can manage to cut back on, keep cuddling them cuties :)

Can only speak from my own experiences....
got our puppy (heinz 57) when dd was 3 & ds was a toddler, she taught them loads and been a great friend and companion to our whole family.
Fast foward we now have 5 children (oldest flown the nest), 5 chickens, 2 rabbits & 2 cats.
And still have our faithful friend, although she is a very old lady (17), sometimes incontinent and abit smelly!!!
But we love her & will look after her until SHE isn't enjoying her life.

As far as finances go....budget budget budget, with an odd 'sod it day' to keep us sane has worked for us. Took a long time but we're nearly there!

Don't know if anyone else has already posted this, but I get my Frontline (and worm tabs) from petmeds (google them), not only are they MUCH cheaper than at my Vets, but I also get Quidco cash back from them. Used to buy my Burns dog food from them too, but they've put it up recently.

They sell Advocate for small dogs for £12.77 for 3 x .4mls, but you need a prescription for that.
Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.
