Growing horseradish

Hi all
My OH is absolutely mad about horseradish sauce, he can polish of a jar in 3 days by standing at the fridge eating it with raw carrots from the veg draw!
It's just occurred to me that I might be able to grow some of my own along with the more usual garden veg (tomatoes, courgettes, beans, peppers, carrots, garlic etc) that I'm growing for the first time this year. I've done a bit of googling and discovered that it can be quite invasive and that you should plant the root in spring and dig it up late summer to early autumn.
My question is does anyone know if I'm too late to plant it now? and if not where should I get a root - the green grocers?! Any other tips gratefully received, thanks!

I have a feeling and someone else will probably confirm this, that Wilkinsons sell them, or your local garden centre may.
Either that or search online for it, loads of places will sell it.
I presume you can plant them at any time you can get hold of the roots.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
hi sareybox
i bought my root fromwilkinsons last year , and now cropping beautifully
garden centres or even pound shops may have roots by where they have bulbs and plants in thosde plastic bags hanging up
i planted my root in a deep pot as was informed horse radish is very in vassive but once you have it you have it for life
you only need a bit grated in hr sauce and the like its so much nicer than than bought though i think most things are good luck x x0 -
I love this site! 3 replies from experts in 15 minutes, where else can you get such service?! I'm thinking of planting in a dustbin, will this be too small do you think? Thanks0

Got mine in a large planter and its doing fine. Been wondering whether to put it into smaller long pots and replant in planter to make it easier to crop.0

Hiya
Got mine from a big Sainsbury's about a month ago, it is in the fresh vegetable section sold loosely by the kilo. I think it was about £12 per kilo, but I only needed a small root knowing that it would grow whatever size it was. Just make sure the root looks healthy and strong, and not dry and wizened. It's now growing v well in a container. I heard its a big grower so that's why I've restricted its position.
Hope this helps0 -
I am about to grow some horseradish too. I have such good memories of it as a child particularly. My Polish dad made horseradish and beeroot relish and we children had to grate the horseradish and I remember wearing goggles as it made my eyes water. I absolutely loved this relish and nothing in a jar has tasted as good ever since. I plan to put our root into the infill between a wall and a fence0

Dont do it!!! The last owners of my house did and now its every where, all in the lawn, and nothing kills it, with in the next week or so it will start growing again and will be sticking up all over the lawn.Always on the hunt for a bargain0

Def think I'll go for the bin / large planter then! Sounds a bit ferocious!0

I assume that if you grow it in a planter or a tub it should be alright then and wont spread through your garden. It doesnt blow seed around when its dry does it?
Also what size container is good for this, just a normal sized bucket for one plant?0
