Charged £39 for £2.50 over any help?

Hey guys/gals my sister is going to get charged £39 for being £2.50 OD.
Is there anything she can do, say, or try, as she is on very low income as it is. she gets £32 weekly put into the account for family allowance.
If she goto to pay then she's got to pay but would it be worth a shot at saying she wants to close the account if she has to pay?
This happened about 6 months ago as well with £1.50 OD and i told her to see the bank manager and he quashed it.
Is it down to the bank manager or is there strict rules they stick by?
any help would be super as she's off down there tomorrow after noon..

If it was a first offence then it's worth asking, but as she's done this before then I doubt it. With respect, if the account has a low turnover of cash, then I doubt they will be too concerned if she does take her business elsewhere.

Can she not work on her budget to keep an emergency tenner anywhere?

    She clearly can't/won't budget.

Tell her to bin any debit cards on the account and cancel any DDs set up.

Then just use the account for hard cash (withdrawn via cashcard/branch counter) purchases for the beneficiary, ie the child(ren).

    Which bank is she with?

Sometimes using a bank account for depositing money and getting cash out ONLY is best for people who can't budget. No DD's, SO's, debit card transactions.

    Failing that a piggy bank.
