How to I sell my private number plate?

I've got a private number plate on my car and looking to sell it before I trade the car in.

Does anyone know how I go about this?!

If you don't want to delay your P/X until you've found a buyer for the plate ( vehicle to vehicle transfer) then I'd put it on a retention certificate. Costs £105 but that includes the £80 transfer fee to another vehicle which you get the buyer to pay in addition to the cost of the plate.

Unless it's something really special you might struggle to sell it privately though I'm sure motoring mags would accept ads. So I'd sell through a broker, google for a selection and ask some for valuations. Like Estate Agents some will over-value to get you with them so be wary of that and I'd only use a broker who advertise in the weekend papers.

We used ELITE to sell Mrs W's reg when we went down to one car and were happy with their service. Sold within 6 weeks at about 3x what we'd paid for it 10/12yrs earlier. You can choose to pay an up front fee or let them take a (larger) cut when they get a buyer. Worked for us.
