Old bills

Not sure if this is the right place to post this so apologies if I'm in the wrong place!
I have a collection of old bills and statements from the previous years and houses I have lived in.
They were all paid on time, nothing is owed I guess I just had a habit of keeping them for reference if needed in the future.
Do I actually need to keep these if there is nothing owed on them?
Its just under my bed is piles and piles of what I think is unneccesary paperwork.
So my question is, in general and as a rule of thump, what paperwork should I keep for my records?
I also have all correspondence from things like old loans (paid of 3+ years ago) car insurance, and basically everything EVER.
Do I really need to keep any of this or can I just shred it all and tidy up a little?
