This morning a Penalty Fare notice from Revenue Protection Support Service came in the post. I am not pleased.

I am a season ticket holder and one day a few weeks back, I arrived at my usual terminus having left my ticket in another jacket pocket. I explained this to the guards at the gate, who gave me a 'Failure to Carry' notice but, having called through to a colleague and confirmed the details of my season ticket, he told me that I would not have to pay any penalty fare and that I wouldn't hear anything about it. He also wrote on the back of the notice that I should be permitted to return back home at the end of the day.

I've called the number for Revenue Protection Support Services, who seem to be debt collectors for the railways, but a recorded message states that everything has to be in writing. I can't put my hand on my wallet right now but I'm reasonably sure I still have the notice, so hopefully any appeal will be successful, but I still feel quite put out at this.

    May be of interest:-

"Season ticket left at home.We expect allowances to be made for season-ticket holders who, for one reason or another, fail to carry their season ticket or photocard. The system used by most operators is that a penalty fare notice will be issued, but no payment will be taken. On two occasions for each person in any 12-month period, the penalty fare will be cancelled when the passenger appeals. Some operators have procedures for cancelling penalty fares notices without having to go through the appeals process and we want to encourage this. The instructions given to authorised collectors must explain what the authorised collector and the season-ticket holder must do in this situation."

    Send a photocopy!!!!
AND send by recorded/signed for mail.

Never give away your evidence! they can just claim to not have received it in the post, just like the DVLA do!
