As far as I'm aware, they still accept it and put the money on a giftcard. If you paid by card, ask them to look on the journal and provide the day that you bought the item on with the last four digits of your card number. Most of the George items I've seen return have been put onto giftcard.

Quite simple, take the item back and change it for something else, they will then give you a new receipt , then take that item back for a refund

What I don't understand is why you did not keep the receipt safe, you knew that you would be returning one of the dresses!

If I were you I'd give them a call and see what they say; no 2 people always tell you the same thing. Or try a different store?

I know I feel stupid I ALWAYS lose receipts :(

I like Deanos idea of swapping it for same value item, keeping that receipt then taking that back. Sounds like a long way around it but at least that way I don't lose out. Its annoying that no 2 people tell you the same story at Asda and that there website doesn't even make it clear!! Why do they say "a receipt it preferred but not essential" - says to me that each store has its own discretion policy which is ridiculous for an International Supermarket Group.

Planning on going back tomorrow so will see how I get on. Wish me luck..... ;)

If you took it back and exchanged it, wouldn't you just get an exchange receipt?

Then when you took that item back you'd still only get another exchange or George vouchers?

The reason it says a receipt is preferred but not essential is because you can use other proof of payment, such as a bank statement, provided you didn't pay by cash.

With cash, you have no record of purchase other than the receipt and it's very hard for the store to track the purchase.

If you pay by card and lose your receipt, you have a statement and the store will also be able to track the purchase on their system with your card number.

Simply put, if you're going to pay by cash, make sure you hold onto your receipt.

That's incorrect. If you look at there store policy here:

    http://your.asda.com/2009/7/28/exchanges-and-refunds

Its says that "simply return it to the store in a re–saleable condition within 28 days of purchase for an exchange or refund — a receipt is preferred but not essential."
As others have pointed out it says a receipt is preferred but not essential, it does not say proof of purchase (which I referred to) is preferred but not essential, they could require you to prove you bought the goods from them before exercising their "refund or exchange" policy, so to a large extent you are relying on their goodwill and what I said was not wrong.
  • ....Its got George Tags attached yet I've gotta prove that I bought it from Asda and not M&S???

I didn't know that other shops sold George items :rotfl:
