You've offered to rectify a situation caused not by your neighbour but by you and your builder using the cheapest option available to you. That seems the least you could do
At the end of the day, you are squabbling over £500.

I feel you are being unfair. £500 may not be much to you but is a hell of a lot for us to just part with whn someone is being so bloody minded.

you also seem to imply that we have gone for the cheapest option without looking at the person that will be doing the work.
the people who will do the repair are the ones that did a 2 room loft conversion for us and are the same guys that did the original work for us. We have had a party wall agreement in which she has signed that she is happy for the builders to make right any damage that may be caused , so we are not palming her off with any cowboys.

OK. But you asked "how much more reasonable can we get?". I always think that a good test of reasonableness is what compromise have you made?

    fair enough.

we have not refused her own guys to do the work-just an opportunity to be given a chance to get it done, and then have it assessed and let her use her own guys after if there are still any issues.

we would have agreed to that if we had been on the other end as long as we had it in writing-which she does.

Is paying up straighaway -no questions asked -a compromise or just giving in ?

you didn't tell us this before... remind her of her obligations under this original party wall agreement first and suggest that your guys do the repairs and that her guys assess it.... sounds like a good compromise here....

Even if you had no faith in her builders anymore? It IS the roof over her head... literally!

My main thought is that you are fast heading for the kind of petty neighbour dispute that could have such a negative impact on the quality of life for all concerned.

I did think of that, but didnt think that would include any other damage other than tha actual party wall.
the area concrned is where her roof meets our dormer.

you are right. sadly I feel that her refusal to have any communication with us so abruptly and suddenly and out of the blue-regardless of what we have to say is what has upset us.
had there been a reasonable discussion-not marred by harsh accusations aimed at us with no thought to our friendship and neighbour relations, we would be seeing things in a different light. it is like talking to a brick wall -literally.

I'm sure that must be a frustration. But, that's the way people are sometimes. My guess, and it IS only a guess, is that your neighbour doesn't want this to get silly any more than you do, but, having drawn her line in the sand, she doesn't know how to back down. Someone will have to swallow their pride and have the bigger picture in mind.

Don't shout at me, but a bottle of wine and a chat might just be what you both need.

I'm sorry I've been so defensive -and PROMISE I am not going to shout :silenced:!

I have always felt she has written to us whilst not thinking clearly. My inital response to her was very different to when I actually responded to her letter 3 days later with a clearer head
I know the damage impulsive actions can do.

I'm not ready for that bottle of wine though....:(

having worked with a lot of builders i can say none of this surprises me, they are a bit rough and ropey and thats the ood ones, damaged tiles and debris in the gutter is common and should have been dealt with before and the price of £500 sounds a bit pricey, your builders should have fixed the tiles and cleaned the gutters and left it at that, too much mouth action and not enough hand action typical builder i am afraid, this situation should never have arisen...your neighbours roof should have been left in a better state than they found it as gesture of good will.

£500 was quote for other work.

the damaged tiles and debris removal was not included in that quote and was done with no charge.
