I have been given different advice on using the power cable. As i will be mainly using the laptop in the same place next to a power point I thought this would be the best option. But have been told my battery would die if not used enough.Advice please

The battery will end up "dying" if you were to use it on the mains all the time through simple lack of use.
I'd personally suggest you "power cycle" the battery every couple of weeks or so to maintain longevity (by "power cycle", I mean you let the battery drop to 10% or so of it's charge and then top it back up).Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0 -

Current laptop battery technologies (LiIon mainly, sometimes LiPol) don't need to be "power cycled". Their lifetime is mainly determined by the number of times they are charged and discharged, so doing so will shorten the battery's life.0
