Barclaycard payment cockup- beware

After finally ending up not paying off my Platinum cashback card in full for the first time since I had it, I paid interest. £38 because I only repaid £2500 of a £2770 balance. Anyway, phoned them up full of p*** and vinegar to be told of the rip off way they calculate interest on an "average balance" for the month. End result is that after much comments about £38 being ridiculous for borrowing £270 and that the Conservatives will be sorting them out and the sooner they do it the better, I managed to get a credit for the interest. So I've still not paid them a penny in four years and not had to play my trump card of "Didn't you have £xxbillion bale-out from the taxpayers so I'm actually £xx thousand in credit?" :T:T:T

Now to the point of my post...

Knew this month might not be cleared off so went to make a payment as soon as I got the statement online in order to reduce the "monthly average balance" (and thus the interest) to be greeted with a message that I couldn't make more than 2 debit card payments in a 30 day period (used 2 to pay previous bill). Phoned them up again. Turns out that they have a problem with the system. Its not going to be sorted out until after the current statement is payable by second week in June so I've been given a payment holiday.

So if, like me, you use more than one debit card to pay, CHECK NOW that you can make another payment. If you can't, RING THEM. Chances are that knowing the money grubbing way they operate, they'll not be giving payment holidays to everyone who is affected, only those who complain.

BTW before anyone offers me debt advice, I have enough sat in my ISA to cover it - it was a !!!! up in timing on my part and the loss of interest on the ISA outweighed what I thought the interest should have been. Won't be doing that again, lol.

Standard practice I'm afraid, you'll just have to take it on the chin. Although I don't understand why you say it's a rip off and 'the conservatives will sort them out'. It's in their terms and conditions so is a case of making sure you read the small print really.

No-one cares about a measly few grand in an ISA.
If you dont like Barclaycard so much change to someone else (though i suspect no-one else would want them)

If they did it was kept very very quiet. I bank with barclays and have a barclaycard so presumably wouldn't received something in the post about how it would affect customers if that was the case.

For the record Barclays did not receive any assistance from the tax payer
so you are not thousands in credit.

There's your first mistake right there.

No, they charge it on the "average daily balance" - the person you spoke to would have explained this but you'll have been too busy ranting to hear it probably.

You'll see it covered on their website

The Conservatives are well known for not being the friends of the finance sector and the city. I'm going to guess you're one of the New Conservative voters. Barclays will be quaking in their boots.

You're clearly a valued customer - what makes you think they actually want your business?

If they took the question seriously, they would have just laughed at you - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/comment/jeffrandall/3480078/Barclays-expensive-independence-is-better-than-government-interference.html

    So glad there is one.

I think you should just close your account with them. They've obviously got a vendetta against you. It's not as if they allow you to make unlimited direct payments from your online banking to sort code 20-04-15, account number 38290008, quoting your card number as reference http://ask.barclaycard.co.uk/help/brochure/1_creditcards/pay_bill

    Thanks for all that.

They keep upping my credit limit. I put absolutely everything on it so they get a lot out of the commission they charge the places I purchase from. 2.5% commission from what I put on it in a typical month is at least 25% more than the interest they charged me for last month.

My apologies for posting something that may have been a warning to others, CannyJock. I'll remember to keep it to myself in future. I thought this board was supposed to be about helping others. I didn't realise it was a board to be made a fool on.:embarasse:undecided
