Car radio/CD problems

Hi All
I know this isn't a big issue compared to some folk who look for advice on here, but I would love to pick someones brain.
I have a Y-reg Renault scenic, with the manufacturer fitted Phillips radio cassette head unit, and the 6-CD multi changer unit under the passenger seat.
Recently the CD was happily playing, then just stopped mid-track (it's a real CD, not a copy), and silence, and the dashboard display simply says "Err(or) CD"
I cannot get the multi changer to eject the shuttle (If that's what it's called) it just whirrs and clicks a bit when I press the button to eject it. When I go through the "function" options on the head unit, it comes up saying "load CD" then goes back to "err CD".
Short of brute force (I'm a wimp!), is there any cheap way of remedying this?
I am a theatre nurse who does lots of "On-calls" etc, so I like my music to keep me company on the way into work (And to keep me awake when driving home after a long shift)
I'd appreciate any help on this - thanks for reading, much appreciated
Lou
