JSA after being made redundant

Options
hello

just a question on behalf of a colleague, we are being made redundant in 8 weeks time, as my severance is good due to length of service, i am not too concerned at the moment, but a couple of the younger members have only got a short service time so have only a very small redundancy package, if they are made redundant would they be able to claim job seekers allowance straight after the severance date? or is their a set time.

also does it make a difference if it is voluntry redundancy or compulsory redundancy?

You and your colleges should make claims as soon as you are out of work, (you can actually claim in advance knowing you wont have a job but it is not really worth the effort) on the first day out of work (try ringing the claim line on a Sat, but if you don't get through till Mon say you want to back date to the Sat).

If you are available for and actively seeking work it is important to start you claim ASAP. The worst that can happen is that they only keep you NI up to date, the best is that they pay your mortgage interest for you. But when you become eligible depends on the number of days since you claimed not since you lost the job, so waiting will cost.

JSA can never be back-dated, so don't delay claiming.

If the redundancy is voluntary then there might be a sanction -- a period of time before any money is paid. But it is still worth claiming because while you are signing on you receive credits of NI contributions.
