BT Cancellation Scam

I've been with AOL for internet and BT for phone line, a loyal customer for years with both but decided recently to combine both, checked out the packages available and contacted AOL to go with them, agreed everything over phone and waited............
I should have recieved a new router and a couple of weeks or more must have passed when I realised I hadn't recieved it, contacted them again and although they had records it had not been activated. Set the wheels in motion again and recieved a letter dated 23/04/2010 letting me know that my order would be activated on 07/05/2010.
Changeover happened on 07/05/2010 and recieved the final BT bill today:mad::mad:.
Bill date 14/05/2010 and cancellation of UK Evening and Weekend Deal £87.75.
I contacted BT tonight and have been told that I took out a new contract over the phone on 29/04/20010 for 12 months. Now I may be stupid but I would have to be insane to agree to a new contract with BT a week after entering a new contract with AOL. I spent a long while on the phone to a BT rep and have got the reference number from this call and have requested a call back service within 48hrs.
What are my chances of BT backing down? I have cancelled my direct debit with BT so hopefully they wont be able to collect. I will post any updates, funnily my father had a similar thing happen a few months back!

Hey,
I have no idea regarding the issue with BT, but with regards to the payment of the bill I have some advice.
Cancelling the Direct Debit may lead to a charge being placed on the account and them messing up your credit file. I would be much more inclined to let them take the DD, then claim it back through the guarantee with your bank for the reasons you've given above.0 -

From what you say it looks like you have been on BT evening and weekend plan auto renewable contract. this renews every 12 months unless you tell them not to.
BT should write to you in the 11th month to let you know its up for renewal and advise that if you dont respond then it will renew for another year automatically.( do you have credits on your bill for the plan?)
If you didnt get a letter you may dispute it but you should also have had an advice of transfer letter from BT when you placed your order with AOL along the lines of "we are sorry your leaving etc. This letter also tells you of any charges for leaving . Did you get that letter?0 -

Ask them for a copy of that conversation and ask them to point out where you agreed to the new contract.0 -
