Renault Clio Leaking Sunroof
Hi
Both myself and my partner have Clio's with leaking sunroofs (apparently a common problem). For anyone in the Newcastle Upon Tyne area here's a couple of places who might be able to help, took me a lot of calls and e-mails to find.
Centreville Garage, Old Shields Road
4A Windscreens, Stepney Road, Byker
R&A Body Shop, Blaydon
I havent had ours repaired yet so if anyone can recommend somewhere then please do! I've had a quote of around £200.
Hope this is useful to someone.:)

BETTA WINDSCREENS CLIO 98/05
SUNROOF REPAIRS
Betta Windscreens Stockport Repairs to Renault Clio 98/05 Sunroof
Repair of a sunroof on a Renault clio can be carried out by anyone who likes a bit off a challenge
Tools Needed are ;
• one 10 mm
• ratchet spanner
• one sealer gun
• tube of silicone sealer clear or black is best one
• bottle of white sprit
• old rags to clean up
• glass cleaner
• latex gloves
• bog spreader/plastic card
Lets start, as sunroof fitters we are aware there is a big problem with the Sunroofs in clios so were going to help you fix it. Starting in the driver seat, open the handle on a manual roof, behind the handle you will see the joint in the trim which holds the headlining to the roof. Take hold of the trim by the joint, pull forward and remove the trim. Once the trim is removed the headlining can be pulled down slightly to reveal the 10mm bolts. The housing unit which contains the light is not fixed by screws and can just be pulled down in one complete unit. By holding the head lining down approximately 4 - 5 inches the 10mm ratchet spanner can be used to remove the bolts which hold the lower frame to the upper frame. Once all bolts are removed the sunroof drain pipes which are located in the 2 front corners need to be pushed forward to separate them from the sunroof frame. Once this is achieved the sunroof can now be lifted out starting from the back. Once the sunroof has been removed from the vehicle glass side down you will find that the roof was fitted with a damning tape from the factory, once you have found this you have now found the problem. Remove the damning tape with a flat headed screw driver. Clean the back with white spirits, wait for the spirit to evaporate. Whilst the spirit is evaporating the roof needs to be cleaned any damning tape which is stuck to the roof should be removed. Once dry then we can apply the silicone sealer to the upper frame of the sunroof. Don’t be shy when applying sealant i recommend going round twice. Using a pair of latex gloves pick up the sunroof and replace into position make sure that the sunroof is sat correctly remove gloves enter the car and begin to replace the 10mm bolts. Once all bolts are fully tightened the pipes which are located at the front can be reconnected. The headlining trim can now be put back and the interior light calving can now be pushed back into position. From the outside of the vehicle all excess sealer can be removed with a bog spreader or a plastic card. Do not use a metal scraper as this can scratch the roof. Once excess sealer has been removed using a rag and white spirit clean off the remainder the sealer once this has been achieved spray glass cleaner on glass and paint work and polish up. Job well done.
NOTES
Do not carry out work on a warm day because by the time you have got all the bolts back into the sunroof the sealer will be semi set and this will be hard to remove.

Someone beat me on the silicone suggestion!
Both mine have leaked- funnily they seem to do it at similar times. So much fun stopping at lights when you've forgotten about it, and getting rudely reminded by a soaked lap.0 -
Most sunroof leaks are caused by the drain tubes being blocked.
The opening panel is not meant to form a totally watertight seal with the roof. There are channels underneath that collect the water that drips through and directs the water down drain tubes that run down the pillars of the car. These can get blocked or come adrift. If they come adrift you normally get a soggy floor or headlining. If they get blocked you get a soggy head.
Edit: Ignore all that. I just remembered that Clio's have the old fashioned type of glass sunroof... or at least my wife's did.0 -
Also worth bearing in mind, in some cases the water will track down into the Multi Timer which is located in the passenger foot well. If this blows (which mine did) its a £300 fix.
Not complaining too much though as my clio is 11 years old and thats about the only real cost I've ever had with it.0 -
I had a clio with a sunroof, and luckily it never leaked, but when driving after it had been raining, you could hear the water 'sloshing' around overhead. I was sure it would start seeping through the headlining at some point.
Never did though - I guess the drain holes weren't blocked, and it could always find it way out quickly enough before building up too much.0 -
Hi I found a great company online through google. Just typed in sunroof repairs and it came up first on google. Phoned the number and was told it could be fixed very quickly...think it was the day after actually.
The guy came and was there approx an hour. I found him to be smart in appearance and very conversant. He put everything into plain english and made it easy to understand.
They were the cheapest I found on the net and I would recommend to all. I havent had a soggy seat since.0 -

I followed these instructions to the letter and now have one lovely dry clio. It's easier to do than you think & will take a couple of hours all in. One extra you might want to consider is undoing the 2 front 'bolts' on the sunroof glass & sealing underneath - one of mine was letting water in.
By the way, I'm female & have never worked on a car before so the fact that I managed this is testament to Bobs great instructions. :T0 -
