Just google for web messenger and you'll get an idea of the multitude of ways your DD can workaround you blocking the MSN application on her PC. That's a lot of url blocking to configure in your firewall.

And even if you do that she'll probably find something like GAIM.

Personally I believe you are going to struggle to find a purely technical solution. You may be interested in this but it will cost you 30 quid.

  • With the right software its very easy to block any website with the words "messenger" in :) This will stop msn messenger or things like trillian, which are clients that access the msn network!

Though it will also stop innocent sites with that word intoo but hey.. win some lose some :D

Put a password on the whole computer, that way if she wants to use it she has to ask, and you can say she can use it on certain days of the week for x hours, and all other times refuse to let her have the puter.

Or put a password on internet access like someone said above, I don't know how to do that (it is possible in dial up, dunno about cable/broadband though, but you have not told us what your OS is or your internet setup anyway so we are all just shooting in the dark here.

As mentioned you will be fighting a battle you cant win with all the other options like web messenger you cant really stop her using messenger very easily.

to stop the use of any of the msn messenger clients like trillian and the official ones you could block the ports that are used by messenger some searching finds these as common ports used by messenger.
    TCP port 1863
    TCP port 6901 (possibly)
    TCP ports 6891 to 6900.
    UDP on ports 1503, 3389, 5004-65535
blocking them will stop messenger working no matter what client is used. the thing is you need to configure them on your router or firewall but software firewalls can be removed or settings changed in other places than the software so it can be got arround. it isnt possible to block the web messenger system to do that you need to block port 80 with is web browsing so the internet would be out of action.

What you could do would be to find as many web messenger site addreses and use the hosts file to redirect any browsing for these sites on the pc to look at itself therfore a page can not be found page would be received.
the hosts file is stored in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\ edit the hosts file with notepad and at the end enter a new line reading
    127.0.0.1 https://www.yahoo.com
the gap is gained by using the tab key, the above example will block https://www.yahoo.com

if you are serious about stopping the use of messenger good luck as there are so many ways arroud it

myspace can be blcoked with the hosts file
    127.0.0.1 https://www.myspace.com
    127.0.0.1 groups.myspace.com
    127.0.0.1 login.myspace.com
    127.0.0.1 blog.myspace.com
    127.0.0.1 search.myspace.com
    127.0.0.1 myspace.com

there are a few others but I cant remember them just check the history of her browsing myspaceand see which other whatever.myspace.com there are in there.

I agree with MercilessKiller and littleange_com. I wouldn't block it and I agree with their points.

I'm sure you wouldn't like it if you had something important to you taken away for no real reason and/or were prevented from talking to other people. :)

I am having a similar problem and I am going to block it via firewall.

The problem isnt with my own child but her friend. Her friend gets banned from there pc probably because of msn and now comes to our house to use my eldest daughters pc, but all she is doing is using my daughter, my daughter is far too soft to tell her to begger off, and I destest her being used and manipulated like this.

So next time it wont work or failing that I swicth off the IP of her pc so no connection via the router.
