Can tax credits just change your payments without informing you

I can't get through to tax credits at the moment.
However, just had a payment of £65 for child tax credit (it came 3 weeks after my last payment) so was not paid at the normal frequency. I usually receive mine around the 27th of the month this was paid on 17th. So I'm hoping it's an extra payment.
We usually receive £214, so £65 seems a lot lower. We have sent off our renewal pack but not heard back from them.
I'm happy if we have been re assessed and £65 is what we are entitled to, however, this is lower than what it suggests on their website and I would have thought that they would write to you before amending the direct debits.
Anyone experiencing similar at the mo.

have you sent in the annual declaration?
have you recently phoned them with a change?
Usually If I have phoned them for a change they alter things and this usually makes the system change your award slightly. Can't think of anything funny to put here!

Just been on the phone to tax credits, was on hold for 45 mins arrrrrgh!
But no problems for us, since receiving our renewals and P60s we were owed £66.85 as a one off payment from last year. The OH has been through our statements and the same happened this time last year but we had been underpaid by £600 then.
Think it's to do with the estimation of earnings compared with actual earnings.
We were told our renewal statement should be in the post, just takes a while to get it up to date. They do the direct debits first, then send the paperwork afterwards.OPs so far £42,139

You'll receive a new award notice shortly explaining your new entitlement - it may have reduced due to your circumstances, or as you say it may be payment of an underpayment from last year. You'll find out soon enough - its nothing to worry about either way.0
