I suspect that shiny side out would reflect more of the sun.0 -

One of the most effective ways of helping to keep rooms cool in hot weather without resorting to the use of electricity and fans, etc is to keep the curtains to keep the sun out and only open them again and open the windows once the sun has sunk or moved away from that part of the building. Then open all the windows at opposite ends of the property to create a through draught, and if possible, open your loft hatch as well. If there isn't any breeze, it might not make much difference but closing the curtains will definitely help.0

My family have all thrown off the duvets and are sleeping under the quilt covers at the moment but my DD3 is in the tiny box room, which is like an oven at the moment even though she has the window open all day. She therefore has to sleep with a clip on fan going all night if I fall asleep before checking she has turned it off.
Somebody somewhere else (I think it was this thread) had the brilliant idea of putting the fan on a timer? If she falls asleep and you do before you turn the fan off, it would then turn itself of at a likely time....
I thought it was inspired and I wish I'd thought of it the two years running MY fan and my son's were on all night! :T

Is there anything that can be used as loft insulation apart from the standard stuff?
My mum lives in a victorian house with 3 attic areas (2 eaves) which have no or minimual insulation.0 -

if you have hot water bottles you could fill with cold water to keep your DD's bed cool
or ice blocks that are used for cool bags, wrapped in a tea towel0
