Hi, im in the process of putting my car on for sale and have a few probably silly questions,
so when you say how many previous owners it has had do you say 1 because thats whats on the v5 certificate or 2 because im the second owner so it will have had 2 when someone else buys it?
Also whats the norm with payment as im selling private, its going to be around 12 grand so i dont want to get done over! is the only way cash and to check it with one of them money checking pen things or is bank transfer or something an option, i'd only feel safe with cash really but 12 grand is alot of money and i've no idea what people usually do.
Thanks in advance

when i sold mine i was given cash and i insisted on going to the bank and paying it in to ensure they were genuine notes.
On the previous owners, doesn't really matter as long as it's clear. so 'I'm the second owner' or 'it's had one previous owner'.0 -
Cash or Bankers Draft and in both cases take the person with you to your bank and have them pay it in there and then - it'll be checked for authenticity etc by the bank.0

There are plenty of forged and stolen bank drafts out there. When you bank it you need to ask for it to "clear for fate". Even if this takes a few days you should not release the car until the draft has cleared.
Plenty of people get scammed by the forged/stolen draft scenario and end up out of pocket and cannot reclaim from their insurers as they voluntarily handed the vehicle over.
The best way is to ask the buyer who they bank with. If it's the same bank great. If not for £12k I would go to their bank with them and offer to pay the £25 fee for a CHAPS transfer. The man without a signature.0 -
Hi, related - if its a car <£1000 and i take cash, should I still insist on them coming to the bank?0

Cash paid into your account would seem fine.0
