I can't believe how stupid I have been! I have filled out the form and emailed my LEA so hopefully something will be done soon! Does anyone have any experience of this?!

Ooops! Apparently I don't have personal experience as I am Monica-from-Friends organised myself! (....sorry, you didn't need to know that at this point in time! :rotfl: ) Some people on my course did this last year and basically their loan installments were a bit later than other people's by 3 weeks or so.
Wait for your LEA to get back to you. If the worst comes to the worst, can you borrow some money from parents/family for a while? Otherwise, all unis have emergency hardship loans that you can access and then pay them back when you get your loan payments.

Usually as long as they get it by the end of August and there are no problems or circumstances that may cause problems then you'll get the loan a few weeks later hopefully.

It also depends on how organised your LEA are, last year I submitted my loan application in April and I still didn't get it till the end of October!
But other people I knew (in other parts of the country) didn't apply till August and got theirs in Sept.

I always apply for mine late - I have this thing about tempting fate by applying before having end of year exam results!!! I've never had to wait more than 3 weeks for my assessment though...

I haven't done mine or rather I've made some mistake, I received a letter from SLC saying I was entitled to £3000 and had requested £0. I will probably call them today now I have had a reminder but you should be OK if you’re not financially assessed. If you are assessed you had better get it sorted out this week. Even if your not assessed if you call them when they are backlogged you may not receive it on time, the year before last I called them at the end of September and it was 5-6 weeks till I got it without any assessment.

If you are in university accommodation and pay the first big rent instalment after you move in tell then you can't pay for a few weeks and they won’t bat an eye. You can usually do the same with tuition fees if you say you had to spend what your parents gave you on rent. If you have a student account and don't use the overdraft use it for a few weeks, if you are in the majority and max it out as I do check if you are allowed an increase, most banks increase your interest free allowance each year.

Universities are used to people getting loans late as some people get the money late even when they have applied properly so there are safeguards in place. Of course you have to make sure you have enough to pay the rent if you are with a private landlord but fees can usually wait a bit. Worst case scenario check your tenancy agreement for what happens in the event of late payment, I wouldn't do this if you have a new landlord but if you have one from the past who knows you they probably wont mind if you can give them a post dated cheque (of course you will need a date of payment from the SLC). Landlords can only charge 8% pa for late rent AFAIK but it's not a good idea to take advantage of this.

If you are assessed and the SLC can’t assess and pay on time ask them if they can pay non assessed then let you apply for the extra in the future, I would imagine you probably can’t do this but its worth a shot.

My daughter only got in through clearing this week so has not applied yet. I know she has tried ringing the student loans people but not got through yet.

We did not expect her to to go so at the moment it feels like we have landed from another planet. We cant understand the whole student loan/ money side of things at all. And we are worried that she will not get any loan at all.

She is going to be in Halls of Residence. I think you can pay the accomadation split into three but how soon will that need paying?

Don't call the SLC - call your LEA. Much quicker and they usually know what they're talking about, unlike the SLC - the head of my LEA said staff turn round is so high at the SLC, that you need to be very lucky to talk to someone who has been there for longer than a few months...

  • I've made the mistake of not applying until very late with two of my 4 applications, and it's never made much difference. The two other times (one being this year) i've applied after the indicated deadline date, and on every occaision it's only ever taken a maximum of about 2 weeks for my application to be processed, this is including financial assessment. :)
