moving into a brand new house, when to order BT?

We're moving into a new property in about 4/5 weeks, but I'm not sure about the following, can anyone help?:
• DO I have to call BT to actually get the line switched on and if so, how long do they usually take? What lead time do they go to
• If they connect, do I have to have a BT contract?
• Would have thought I could look at others like Talk Talk and get Broadband etc?
• I'm looking for a broadband package I think as I work from home sometimes - so what's the best quality deal out there, uncapped?
Any advise much appreciated, especially if there's anything I should consider?
Thanks in advance

If you want a BT service, speak with the developer and they will usually allow BT access to the property before completion (but after exchange) so as to ensure all the necessary work is completed to allow you to have a fully functioning landland on the day you move in.
Having got that approval, you will need to contact BT if you want their service.
You will have a contract with BT if you instruct them to supply a new line.
(although you don't have to take their broadband service)"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Hi,
Yes, I believe BT have already been in there and the line is in.
SO I guess I just need to order the line to be switched on?
So I Have to take their telephone line then? I can't just go to Talk Talk now then?0 -

You can still use another provider. BT installs most lines and owns all the exchanges, you don't have to use them if you prefer talk talk etc. This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0 -
so I can just call Talk Talk and tell them to come and switch it on?
BT don't have to get involved now the line is there?0 -
Whoever you choose in this circumstance will charge you their applicable connection charge, which BT normally charge £125 (I think) and Talk Talk only charge £69.99. SO you may be better off using talk talk.0

ok, thats a great saving from BT - no brainer then?0

In theory you can use any Service Provider to connect a new line but you may find that TT say they cannot provide your new line and get BT in first...you say the TT offer of £60 is a no brainer, that is for a 24 month contract, BT were (dunno it it still applies) doing free connection in return for an 18 month contract.....if the address is brand new then BT spent money putting the services into the property , so as the first 'user' of the line, you will be charged the initial connection fee ( £120 ish) its upto whatever SP you use if that charge is passed onto you or absorbed by the SP.
Its got nothing to do with the delevoper, so dont bother asking them, call an SP or your choice,0 -
Why don't you ring Bt and ask them, then ring talk talk and talk to them, and see which is the best option for you in your new house.
