That's 32 mpg. Something wrong with the vehicle or your driving.

32mpg for something the size of a berlingo with just a 1.4 petrol engine and short runs sounds about right.

FWIW i had a berlingo diesel van and it barely bettered that.

Thinking about getting a diesel is a bit like thinking about getting a circumcision. Only get one if you really need to.

This DPF system is a potential problem. No-one seems to know just how much hard driving you need to do to clean it out. The AA says 10 minutes over 40 mph http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/fuels-and-environment/diesel-particulate-filters.html which seems fine as we can all do that once a week or once a month but there is no guidance. If they said doing 5 to 10 miles a day on sub 30 mph runs would screw it up then fine, we would know. But they do not.

    .

    10 minutes at 40mph?

Given that my Mazda6 is geared at 36mph per 1000 revs in 6th that's hardly hard driving. They should at least say 10 mins at 2500revs or whatever and advise you to drive in a low gear to achieve it at sensible speeds.

    I have a 1.9d berlingo and wish I had bought the 2.0hdi, extra £1k and 10mpg.

In addition to considering your annual mileage, I like to consider how long I plan on keeping the car. If you change every 3 years then its not worth getting the deisel, but if you keep the car 10-15 years(till it dies) then I would be getting the deisel. Just my opinion though.

my van was the 1.9. I think its because the engine is underpowered relative to the weight of the vehicle, so its always struggling.

    I think theres now a 1.6HDI too.

If the OP drives solo then the 1.4 petrol should be OK. If he/she drives 5up with luggage then the diesel will be better. The Nemo/Bipper isn't the most aerodynamic car in the world, so combine this with load and headwinds and the torquier diesel will be better.

As far as the economy goes I have a 1.3CDTI Corsa on a 54 plate - done 57,000 miles now - the car returns about 45-50mpg driving around town with the odd run a bit further and obviously a lot more cruising on the motorway.

I check how many miles per gallon I'm doing pretty regularly.

Not sure about that analogy! :rotfl:

I'll tell you about my ownership period. I bought a diesel in November, ex manufacturer- registered at their head office. Since then I've done, 7500 miles (slightly above my average to be fair, took it to show relatives etc) but normally do around 12000 or so a year.

Perhaps not stonewall diesel mileage I accept, but difference in price at 1 year old between it and same powered petrol model was nothing- diesel had lost it's massive differential in price due to depreciation. I wouldn't have got it new anyway, but certainly not at the price level of the diesel, someone (manufacturer) lost a whack on it!

I have to say I wanted the petrol one, but the diesel was same price, the car mags said it was a cracking engine, one of the best out there and crucially they had one in my spec and better economy.

Yes it is an all singing, all dancing Euro 5 clean model with DPF, EGR valve and DMF and all sorts of nice £1500 bills but I'm not too bothered at the moment. It got over 11/12000 mile mark when some owners mentioned about the DPF getting !!!!ed. My tax will be £90 next year and I'm getting decent economy and speed. Given only 2 miles of my commute is on 30mph town roads, the rest on motorways etc at 50+ I think I made the correct choice. Given it is ex manufacturer I also think it might have been treated slightly better! Well I can dream :rotfl:

Economy is well under what they state on the commute, but not too surprised- tend to average 50mpg- 44 going to work, 56 coming home (hills!) but on a normal cruise on the motorway, I get 60-ish. Economy is stated I think at 68mpg extra urban- can be achieved if you sit at 55mph and are gentle.

Diesel is worth it, but only if
    1. The maths adds up
    2. You regularly go on journeys for longish spells at 50mph+
