Is this quote right? Rewire

Options
Hi,

We are looking for some advice. We have been offered on a mortgage on the condition we get electrical reports and a quote on the work that needs to be done to 'fix' whats there.

Its 3 bed semi detached in London and we were told by the electrican it needs a complete rewire to meet current standards.

We have been quoted almost £10,000 for this work.

Im no expert but this is all a bit shocking and not of the electric variety :)

Of course we need to get more quotes but Im not sure how to see the wood from trees in terms of reputable electrians.

Its not a mansion, one through lounge, small kitchen, bathroom and 3 bedrooms.

Does that sound right?

Seems ridiculously high to me! Ask friends etc if they know any electricians who have done work for them that they have been pleased with. Recommendation is probably the best way forward.

Ridiculously high - should be more like £3-3.5K. (depending on whether the property is empty for the work - makes it quicker). If I wanted to charge 10K for a 3 bed re-wire here in West Yorks I would get laughed out of the place. It must be hard work being a London sparky and having to put petrol in your Bentley!

Look here for typical 3 bed house re-wiring costs around the country.

Dear Pammy, if it helps for the same job - 3 bed mid ter, i have had 3 quotes:

£2800, £3000, £5600, all will involve , empty property, and floors and wall are being re done at the same time. These are complete costs, all material included

    Hope this helps.

We had compete rewire (includes hardwired smoke alarm and heat sensor in kitchen) for £3000. 3bed bungalow and it was empty. I'm sure you will get a better quote.:)

It all depends on what you are having installed, whether it's going to be surface mounted, whether the electricity board have to come in to move the head, etc.

£10K does sound a bit rich by anybody's standards though if it is going to be a "standard" (3 sockets per room in basic white fittings, standard single pendant, etc) rewire.

If you are south of the river then I'd be happy to quote.
Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.
