I know but when you get a new cheque book, does the number on first cheque of the new book follow on from the number of the last cheque from your old book? Eg if the last cheque in the old book is number 444 will the first cheque in the new one be 445?

Usually yes, unless you've cancelled a cheque book in the meantime.
