I've recently bought a car and there is no parking space outside my house (live on corner house next to round about) at the moment we have it parked outside a freinds but there is a spce across the road where we can keep an eye on it but it is outside someones house. Now the dont have a car so it would not cause them problems parking BUt can they stop me from parking outside there house?
Also another question, can i park on a private peice of ground as long as there are no signs up saying parking is forbidden, ie outside a shop at the other side of the pavement?

I don't see how it could be a problem re outside someones house if it's an ordinary road. We park where we can in our road and so does everyone else. If it's designated parking spaces, that might be different.

As to private ground, I'm afraid I don't know.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

Might be courteous to mention you would like to park in front of their house? Good neighbours and all that.

hi no one has any right to park outside their own door,so long as the car is taxed and mot you can park on any public highway so long as there are no restictions on that road (ie yellow lines, roundabout, clearway, ect, ect)
  • When I lived in Japan, to register a car we had to prove to the Police and the insurance company that we had a dedicated parking space to park the car. So everyone had a space and there were no problems with "neighbours from hell" parking in front of our driveway and blocking our exit, etc. I wonder how that system would go down here?

As long as you are not parking across a dropped kerb and as has been said, that there are no other restrictions, there is nothing they can do. Anyone could park outside their house so I don't see the need for you to even tell them you are going to park there.

At the other end of my road where parking is a touchy issue one of neighbours puts the wheelie bins in the road (near the kerb) in front of her house thereby saving her space! I would be so tempted to 'move them around a bit' if I lived near her. Luckily where I am, we have allocated parking so no hassle - a modern group of starter homes were added on to the street after the first houses were built in the 70's

We're not allowed to put our bins outside of our own property boundaries, even the night before bin day, so she would get fined if she lived in our borough.

If it's a public road, then anyone can park there. If it's a private drive or allows access to a private drive then no they can't (i.e. you can't park your car in a space that restricts access for that person).

In our city we have resident parking permits - each area of the city has a code letter (e.g. our code is "E"). We pay £25 per year and we can park in any "E" zone within our neighbourhood. Anyone without a permit can't park there at certain times of day (normally working hours as this is when people want to park in the street so they don't have to pay car park fees). This system works really well and most people are happy with it.

As for the lady who puts her bins outside her house to "save her space" - sorry, but I can totally see where she's coming from. I used to live in Cornwall and every summer we have thousands of tourists travelling down (I incidentally didn't make my economy from them so could happily have lived without them! ), don't want to pay for car parks so park on residential streets, which means that residents can't park. it is utterly infuriating to not be able to park outside or even anywhere near (and I'm talking within a mile here!!!) of your own house. I certainly think certain towns could benefit from resident parking permit schemes e.g. tourist areas, people who live near city centres, offices, hopitals etc.

(:rotfl: Sorry - this turned into a bit of a rant didn't it???)

I would ask your neighbour if you can park outside their house. If someone started parking outside my house all the time without even asking I would think it mighty cheeky of them! Think how you would feel if you were in their position and someone did that to you. Ask them, they will receive it better than you just putting your car there. Whether you have the right to park where you like or not, it is only polite to ask. :)

People don't own the space outside their house; anyone can park there. No cheek involved.
