I got a form from him (cant recall what type) as I am at work. No certificate could be issued based on the faults I have listed.
If he could not reinstate the circuits which don’t meet current standards then we would hardly have any electricity to any rooms to the house. Hence why I am seeking to get the higher risk rooms rewired soon.
the sparks should have not energised the system with these faults, he should have tested first then charged for the test and given you the option to remedy then and there, he would have seen the lack of earths in seconds when he took the lid off!, can i suggest you get someone else in to do the job
good luck0 -

fair point but we had 3 quotes for the job and no electrician opened the original comsumer unit cover. They all just had a quick look and give me their standard price for a new unit change. I had seen this guy's work on other jobs he done for me and he seemed reasonable.0 -
If he couldn't issue a cert, he should NOT have reinstated the juice under any circumstances. No certificate could be issued based on the faults I have listed.
I think you've been had over, which certainly explains the ridiculously cheap prices you are getting.
Please do your utmost to find a qualified sparks PDQ, because if you have an electrical fault that results in a fire then you can kiss goodbye to any insurance as it will be null & void.Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0 -
Thanks for your advice. We did not just choose this electrician over price. We tried for quotes from several ones and they all quoted in the region £275-350 for a standard changeover. To be honest if we could have obtained spare MCBs for previous unit, we would have not considered changing it.KillerWatt wrote: »If he couldn't issue a cert, he should NOT have reinstated the juice under any circumstances.

But sure you will appreciate getting a full rewire is not going to be cheap and not easy, as it will entail lifting many carpets, floorboards, chasing thro walls to access sockets, switches etc. But we do understand it is important to have such importants to the current standards.0
