Just had baby and got back with ex, worried about benefits

  • Tax credits can usually give you a rough estimate to what you would be entitled to over the phone. Also you can go to your local council, speak to the housing benefit department, and you can have a 'Pre-Tenancy Determination'. You explain all your income, quotes of tax credits you would have already enquired about, and they'll more or less give a close enough figure to how your LHA/Housing benefit amounts would be, including your partner.
  • Wouldn't you be better off working rather than relying on the tax payer to bring up your child?
I would have thought my constructive advice was rather apt...

That's not constructive advice that's a question, and it's one that's clearly intended to upset. Why use the phrase 'relying on the taxpayer'? We all do that every time we benefit from a public service.

Sorry V Debt, I can't answer your question but just wanted to stick my nose in. :)
Only 3% of those registered blind in the UK have zero vision.
  • Maybe the original poster has either a) taken my advice and had a guilt trip that the hard working majority prop the benefit claimers up, or b) realised that a new government is coming in that wants to reward hard work instead of scroungers and realised the leopard had better change its spots?

Just to be clear, I am 110% agreed that those deserving of benefits fully deserve all the help that the state can give them. It's these people that I am more angry for if anything (as well as the hard working majority), because the more benefits that are handed out to those with "bad backs" or "stress", the less there is to support the elderly, severely disabled, etc, who really need our help.

Work should not be optional, it should be a basic life requirement, and people like the original poster should not be asking what they are entitled to with the "poor me" outlook, but asking what they can do within their particular constraint (if indeed there is one beyond sticky mattress syndrome). Sorry to be so blunt, but for those of us that work hard to carry these people, the time to act and change this is now.

Some of those with 'bad backs' are severely disabled.....as are some of those with mental illnesses.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

    Such as.....?

If you take more than you put in, you are incapable of supporting yourself and reliant on someone/something else to do it for you. That is fact.

Thread closed as it is off-topic, I have previously asked for posters to take their judgements and discussion of benefit policy to DT but this has been ignored.

To the op, please re-post your question if you have not got the answer you need and if anyone has got no constructive advice to give the benefits board is not the correct place to post.
