Gas bill
7064.91 kwh used over 96 days

first 705.00 kwh x 6.621p
next 6359.91 kwh x 3.050p

£240.66 exc VAT

Two bedroom end terrace - open plan. 10 year old boiler. room thermostat fit half way through this quarter. Winter bill was £260 and we'd tried to be more sparing with the heating this time - but seemingly to no avail.

Switched to energysmart with onlinesaver2 this very day - it isn't the cheapest tariff. but I like the idea of paying for exactly what I've used each month - no surprises.

cheers for your help

Are either of the readings estimated? If so you don't have a true reading of your usage.

    It's only a game

To me Energysmart for gas does not make much sense as, whilst you will get small bills during the summer months, you'll get huge ones during the heating season.
Will you put by some money to cover the winter gas bills?

    Yes I guess so...

I'm still not totally convinced. You give the monthly reading and get the exact monthly amount which you pay - if it's massive (in a winter month) , i guess the ideas is that this would encourage you to try and save energy by the usual methods, the next month. So in effect you are more in tune with what you are using/paying for. As opposed to paying a flat monthly amount and getting billed quarterly/annually and by the time you realised you've overused, it's too late?

I've never done either - just signed up to former - usually pay quarterly when bill comes in. But i agree - saving a bit during the summer is a necessity - but better it be in my account than the energy companies huh.

so I suppose discipline is the key word!

I've just been on to Southern who provide my gas and electrc as I'm switching to a different tariff, but probably staying with them. The lady I spoke to was really helpful and gave me a figure for my annual usage based on real measurements. Mine is for a 3 bed detached house, gas central heating/hot water and it's on quite a lot. The figure for a year was 10597, so only 1.5 times what you've said you used in around 3 months. Doesn't seem right somehow....

    I'm on

Gas - 16000 kwh per annum - £633.09 incl VAT
    electric - 1900 kwh per annum - £ 242.52 inc VAT

2 bed end terrace - open plan. 2 adults , 1 new born

This isus trying to be energy aware! Think reading around this is average tho?

ellay864 - how the heck do you get 10000kwh oper annu for a 3 bed semi with it on a lot - how much are your bills?

    Its a 3 bed detached :)

It may be a bit higher now - they gave me that figure based on real readings from Oct 08 - Oct 09 so last winter would have been a bigger chunk given the extreme cold. But even if you doubled mine (which I would hope would be greatly overestimating) it would be 22000 - not so much more than yours considering.
I have room thermostats and my boiler is only around 4 years old. I generally have the heating on for about an hour - 90 mins in morning depending on time of year, in warm weather it's water only. Then in the evening hot water for about 90 mins, bit extra if running a bath or doing loads of washing. In winter it'll be on more in the evning but I try not to have it too much. One thing...I'm at work, kids at college etc...it would be different if I was at home all day - you didnt say if thats what youre doing
