Help someone please. I currently get tax credits - disabled low care high mobility. No children. Work 28.8 hours PW.

There is a possibility I could increase my hours fractionallyto 30 PW

I am looking for practical advice on if this could be worth it for me. I've had totally mixed info and the helpline was even worse. I lost the will to live after 20 mins on hold with no decent advice at the end. They told me how much I currently get and all I can say is "I wish!" to that. It was 4 times what I get but my P60 and last years award notice only differ by £3 over the year.

I suspect my current award just took me over the limit for free prescriptions as at first I was told I didnt qualify so applied for help with health costs. Only to get a letter saying I was exempt via tax credits. That is worth a lot to me so wonder about the extra hours and if that would make a difference. If it pushes that over the limit I'd need to factor in pre-payment cert & dental treatment costs.

I tried to renew by phone but as my claim pack hadnt arrived they couldnt do it. It was sent 2 weeks ago apparently so I think lost in post but they wont do anything until it arrives well after 2 weeks in post I suspect its not going to unless its being walked down the country.

The tax credits web site calculator I tried and guess what that came out with totally different figures to last year and this despite no changes and just for the fun I tried same figures and it came out with different again.

Thanks in anticipation of someone with some undersatnding of tax credits. and before you ask NO children! This seems to be where it confuses everyone.

Didnt really want to put salary on here for public view but if you can help I will send as private message.
  • Can I just clarify that you are already on Disabled Tax Credits? Or are you intending on applying for them?

Yes been getting them several years now. The only thing I'm considering changing is going from 28.8 hours to 30 hours.
  • Surely then what you would work extra, would be taken away in the other hand by Tax credits?

Thats my worry as dont want to push health issues so off sick more. But knew something about the 30 hour rule. Tried a contact at work today who basically felt I may be fractionally better off financially but would most likely push it over the limit for free scripts so that is a big cost to take into account. Put it simply if I do a years pre-payment it would be about the cost of a basic batch of prescriptions.
