Told my boss I was pregnant. And now I`ve lost my job

Hi, wondered if any of you could give me some advice, it would be much appreciated.

I was working as a part time youth worker for my local council. I worked hard to get my job and loved it. Another worker who was full time left and I was asked if I would take the fulltime post. This was a bit further to travel and as I already have 2 children, would have to rearrage child care I told my boss I wasnot interested in this post. The council then advertised the post but could not fill it, I was then offered the full time job again. So I spoke to my husband and we dicided that the extra money would be helpful and we could re arrange child care ect and do it. I took the job in September, we have been trying for a 3rd child for 3 years and eventually I fell pregnant I have been doing the job for about 2 months . I told my boss I was pregnant in January to which he replied my post was only temporary and that they would be looking to recruit someone from April to April on a years contract. I have try`d to get advice from HR about my entitelments ect, and spoke to my boss about my postion, he told me my job had been advertised and I could apply for it.
I was hoping to go back into my fulltime position after maternity leave as my husband has a flexible job and could look after the children 4 days a week. My boss then told me I would be moved back to my original job on less hrs with less responsibility. This felt like a kick in the teeth, the end of March came and my position had still not been clarified and my doctor advised me to go on the sick. I have contacted acas and was wondering if anyone out there could tell me my rights.

Thanks

think they should have advised you in writing that the job was on a yearly contract before they convinced you to give up a part-time position.

Don't think they can say it was on a "trial period" either as you already worked for them.

Wait to see what ACAS advise.

Did your boss advise that this was tempoary when you started back in September? If not then I would imagine that they are on very dodgy ground?

What advise have HR given you?

I was only advised the post was temporary when I told them I was pregnant. HR have not given me any advice they have been reluctant to speak to me until now. Acas have been in touch with them and now they want to speak to me to confirm any confusion and inform me again the post was only temporary and that this was done before they found out I was pregnant....

I would go back to ACAS with this - surely they cannot suddenly back date something as say 'oopss, we forgot to tell you'!!!

it's difficult when its your word against theirs though. If I were you I'd fight it every step of the way!

I agree in principle but surely in a case like this there is no 'her word against theirs' as her 'temporary position' should have been confirmed in writing!

    MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email !!!!!!.
  • Your boss advised you to go off sick for this? or did you claim stress.

As for the position. What was signed when the job was taken up? what did this say?

It isnt common in local authorities for posts to only be funded year to year so I wouldnt be surprised if you genuinely were only offered a secondment or job until March on paper.

What did the letter of confirmation about the post in September say, word for word?

Was the part time post a contract to contract post?

What was in the job advert?
Did that say 12 month renewable contract?

How long had you been doing the part time position?
