Tax Rebate Help

Hi

I am due a substantial tax rebate but the tax office are dragging their feet with it. Last year i only earnt £5,068 and paid £905 in tax. I feel that I should get the whole lot back but I know that might not be the case.

Is there any way to get the tax office to deal with this faster? I started my enquiry in Feb and have sent them p45s and my p60 but they say they won't do anything until June.

Has anyone else had this problem? What can I do? I really do need this refund and can't see why it should take them so long.

Replies would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Claire.

Contact your local MP, explaining the situation and giving dates. I did last week, and she said she would investigate it.

    Hey

I am in the same situation although they have contacted me to tell me i am due a rebate but wont tell me how much (dunno why so any suggestions please pm me!!) they are starting to use a new system which staff wont be trained in until may so applications wont be processed until June at the earliest.

I can only assume that the new system means they wont screw up in the future but after all it is the tax office!

Have a nice wait and an even nicer time when yours finally comes through!!

Because they are too busy solving earlier problems
  • Hi All,

I find myself waiting on HMRC again to deliver a refund on my PAYE overpayments.
I have been told that my issue will be dealt with at the end of JULY! This is because of a new computer system that has caused a backlog - even though I believe they should deal with issues within 28days of recieving them (I sent my query on 8/05 so should expect something around the 10/06).

The interesting point is that last year I had to claim a refund - this was delayed because of a new computer system that had caused a backlog. Is this HMRC just fobbing people off with the same excuse because they can't keep up with the work that they need to keep up with!?

Oh well just another annoyance to ruin my finances a bit further!
  • gah, mine was sent in online on the 01/05 so am hoping i dont have to wait until the end of july!
  • I was widowed in September 2000 and have been receiving Widow's Beneft from the DWP since then. No tax is deducted so my tax code is adjusted to take account of this additional income. Each year the Inland Revenue have sent me a Notice of Coding with their estimate of the Widow's Benefit I will receive. Each year I've meant to write to them with the exact figure, which tends to be about £1,000 lower, but never get round to it (pathetic, I know!). I spoke to our office's accountant last year and he said that I should be able to make a claim for tax overpaid from the start. I wrote to the IR recently with a copy of the DWP's letter showing my benefit for the coming year, and they have issued a revised code for year 2010-2011. However, they have told me that the rules changed recently and I can now make a claim for a rebate for only the past four years. Is this correct?

As you presumably do NOT do a tax return every year (if you did you would not have this problem) and you are on PAYE, it is looking like you have been talking to a muppet.

I think these people probably have got it right.

Note Commercial organisations have to go back 6 years for you. HMRC ask for 2 and a bit months less; so that a year that ended in April must be claimed for before the end of January 5 years and 9 & x days later. Probably so they can process your claim before the end of their year.

You do have one problem if you leave it to the last moment. HMRC never sign for anything and won't acknowledge your letters for months.

The rules have changed but it won't take effect until 2012 so you can still go back 6 years, up to the 04/05 tax year until 31 Jan this year.

When people phone HMR&C they generally expect to be told the right information so it's a bit disapointing that they are getting basic stuff like this wrong.
