Update. Pause and Instant rewind have now started working so I am going to stick with the SATA disk and see what happens over the next few days and weeks.

Hi, my Pace 3100 Sky+ box works fine with the various 3.5 inch and 2.5 inch PATA disks I have. I use a 3.5 to 2.5 inch adapter for the 2.5 inch disks. I have used maybe 7 different disks in it at various times with no problems.

The biggest capacity PATA disk I have is 250gb and that is getting full so yesterday I decided to test it out with a 320gb 2.5 inch SATA disk using a PATA to SATA adapter that I know works with other devices.

I installed the adapter and SATA disk, did a full system reset and then successfully made some test recordings. Everything worked fine so I removed the SATA disk, used Copy+ to transfer about 200 gb of programmes from the PATA disk onto it and put it back in again.

Everything was fine. All the recordings and series links were there. It played back perfectly and made new dual recordings just as normal.

Great I thought. High capacity SATA disks are easier to get than PATA disks so I can shop around for a 500 gb SATA disk knowing that my adapter doesn’t cause a problem.

Later I tried to “pause” a programme. It refused to pause. The on screen “pause” graphic was displayed but the programme kept on playing. I tried “instant rewind” (I have that set to 15 minutes) and that didn’t work either. Again the correct on screen graphic was displayed but the programme just carried on.

I am puzzled why this should happen. I suppose there is something in the SATA adapter or SATA disk that the box doesn’t like but I would have expected it to not be able to play back or record at all. If the box can playback and record normally, why can’t it also pause or rewind? Surely they are the same things?

I can get around the problem by getting into the habit of recording the programme I am watching and then, if I do need to pause or rewind, I can do that from the planner.

But that is a pain and no doubt I will forget to record more often than I will remember and I will also need to remember to delete the recordings I have unnecessarily made.

I realise I am using a disk technology that the box was not designed for but I do like to push the boundaries of technology sometimes and it would be good to have the SATA disk option.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I have now also discovered that I cannot record the channel I am watching. The red light comes on and the programme is added to the planner but nothing is being recorded.

Programmes added to the planner before they start will be recorded ok but, once a programme has started, I can't record it.

    Weird.

Oh well, back to PATA disks until I upgrade to HD later this year.

Unless some genius has a solution.

    Getting weirder.

Before putting the PATA disk back in I tried pause and rewind again with the SATA disk and they are now working normally.

Maybe there was a temporary software glitch before.

Anyway, as things stand the SATA disk with adapter now appears to be fully working so I will see how it goes over time.

I’ll be very pleased if it keeps working as it saves me having to buy a large capacity PATA disk.
