edf energy change of account holder

My partner left about 3 years ago and has left his name on the edf energy account. I've tried to call up edf and change the account in to my name, so i can pay by direct debit and change energy company if i need to. The thing is edf has made it very difficult and will not discuss anything about the account nor will give me the information on how to change the account to my name. I've been paying the edf energy bills by cheque so our electricity and gas will not be switched off.
Is there any way to change the account to my name or is there any other way to sort this problem out?

The supplier will be hesitant to remove his name from the account unless they have good reason to believe he is no longer associated with it.

What have you done with respect to the place you are living in? If it's rented, do you have a TA without his name on? If owned, is the ownership in your name only now?

This is the type of document the supplier may need to see before agreeing to remove his name from the account.

If it's possible to ask your ex-partner to call the supplier and end the current agreement, that may make it easier for you to start an agreement in your name.

    Thanks for the reply.
I own my place and now have every other bill in my name except edf energy. My ex-partner no longer lives in England and i've asked him numerous times to ring the supplier up for me whenever hes back but he's not been helpful.

Any suggestions on what paperwork/evidence i need to send in?

Unfortunately, they can. She is not the existing account holder and so a request to switch supplier will almost certainly be prevented by the existing supplier.

I would speak to the supplier and ask them what exactly they would need. You can do this as a general question, not specifically about your ex-partner's account, and hence it will not fall foul of the DPA.
A copy of the solicitors letter showing the completion/transfer into your sole name would probably the type of document they would want.

I would write to them and give them an opening reading and say that I wopuld take responsibility from that reading. And I would offer to pay the old account up to that reading. But I would not pay them a penny after that reading until it was in my name.

If you do that, they have to produce a bill before thay can take you to court. You can even defend an action against the ex by producing a copy of the letter telling edf that you are taking over the account.

If you wanted I could have a look into it for you?

Just let me know the account number in question and a contact number I can get you on. To be honest they shouldnt really be being that awkward unless there is a debt on the account or something along those lines.
