Can you part-ex for a cheaper car???

Hi,

Simple question I hope. Will dealers take more expensive cars in exchange for cheaper ones - i.e. like a part-ex in reverse, where you'd end up with the cheaper car plus some cash for the difference?

Related to that, is the trade-in price offered by dealers related to the price of the car you want to buy, or do they go off part-ex book prices (e.g. Parkers) regardless?

Cheers,
Mike

In my experience, dealers do not offer good prices for part exchange cars, and I've not found it comes even close to half of any book prices - maybe I've just been unlucky.

If you can face the hassle (!), you'll get a better price selling it privately - at slightly less than the book price, and then buying the car you want through a dealership. By selling it less than the book price, you will get more interest, and are likely to sell it quickly (nothing worse than waiting weeks for a car to sell!).

Again if you have the time, it would be worthwhile going round several dealers - because perhaps you'd find one that really wants your car and would give you a good offer.

i know my brother is always happy to do this but remember they are there to make a profit so they are not going to give you top dollar for your car, also car dealers normally only use cap or glass's guide and these prices are more realistic than parkers and what car,on the other hand if the dealer has old stock he might still do you a good deal.

You can get a good idea of selling/buying prices at this site, foc (Glass's website charges £2.95):

Thanks all. I agree that selling privately might be the better option, but I'm just not sure there's time in this case.
