Charged for paying off a current account!?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if someone could help answer a question for me? I recently paid off the overdraft on my old Barclays account to Nil in order that I could close the account as I no longer use it. However, I just received a statement today, informing me that I am now £1.07 overdrawn! Could someone tell me how they can charge me for not having any money in the account and not being in the red!!

Cheers
Russ

Perhaps you paid off the outstanding Overdraft including interest applied only up until the previous month? So having cleared what you thought was the total amount, Barclays have now debited the rest of the interest which has accrued up until the day you made the payment.

Hope that makes sense! Why not ask them?:o

Sounds like interest accrued from the last charging period to the date you paid it off. If you'd asked the bank for a closing figure when you paid the balance off, they'd probably have quoted an extra amount to cover accrued interest.

When I paid it off I asked the teller how much did I needed to pay to have the account at nil as I wanted to close it. Would this not have been good enough?

Oh well, fair enough. I know its such a small amount that has been charged but really it is the whole principle of the thing I suppose? I'm just glad I'm leaving them as they have been nothing but rude to me over the past few months while paying the account off!

Thanks for all your advice anyway Mark7799 and Coupon mad

Might be worth relaying this conversation to someone at the Bank (not a cashier) and maybe they'll write the balance off?

Ask a personal banker to do a rep figure based at todays date for how much you need to pay to clear it in full.
