From the description you have given BES1971 I would suggest this may be a package and so you should benefit from a full refund if it does not go ahead.

tiff - no you dont need a package, certianly not in those scenarios, but its certainly the safest option when booking a holiday as has been demonstrated in the last month (and way before that on seperate occassions with failures etc).

BES1971 - I would check the terms you have and see if they refer to you bookng a package or if they suggest that a fly/cruise is deemed as anything else by them. I imagine they term it as a package though so its one price for one product with one company.

You should see (but its not always seperated) a APC levy of £2.50 per person on your invoice.

Many thanks for all your help. Yes, APC levy is specifically itemised& the follwing statement appears on the invoice
All monies paid by you for the air holiday package shown are ATOL protected by the Civil Aviation Authority. Our ATOL number
is 2752. £2.50 per person from the cost of your holiday is paid to the CAA to provide this protection.

reCityBoy & taking insurance at time of booking---
yes I would agree. Unfortunately I fell foul of an annual policey that was NOT automatically re-newed on my 65th birthday. My fault & perhaps a lesson for others.

Flights booked to travel from Belfast on Sunday 16/05/2010 booked for direct and paid for on credit card.
Accommodation booked seperatly, also paid for on credit card.

Flights fully refunded, with exception of accommodation; a £145.00 cancellation fee.

So I tried my luck with the credit card for "Consequential Losses" on reading the article below:

"Another alternative is to claim for compensation under Section 75 of the Consumer Crecit Card Act which makes the credit card company liable for your costs.
You can claim consequential losses – hotels, food and so on – but Paul Lawler, from moneysupermarket.com said the chances of recouping money this way was “unlikely”.

    Caroline Gammell - Telegraph.co.uk - (22/04/2010)

Quote from Nationwide Credit Card Services in response to a letter i sent re: the above:

"Unfortunately in this instance you do not have a valid Section 75 Claim this is not because of an “Act of God” clause, it is because to raise a claim under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act you must be able to prove that a misrepresentation or breach of contract has occurred. Due to there being no breach of contract on the part of the airlines due to planes being grounded for reasons beyond their control, unfortunately you do not have a claim to raise against Nationwide under the aforementioned act.
