Turned down for a Bank account

I looking for help and advice on where to go now :money:

My Partner and i are looking to open a joint account, we have both got good credit scores, (have checked with Equifax)

However we have been turned down for a normal bank account with Barclays (no overdaraft, all we wanted was a debit card each)

There are a few things i can work out affect this

1. We have recently moved house (1st June)

2. We are not on the Electoral register and can not get on it untill december this year

3. Also worryingly experion - credit checking agency don't recognise either of us at our current address ( could this be due to the electoral register)

We jointly have an anual income of about £55000 gross and are not asking for an overdraft.

Please can i ask for peoples advice as to what to do next, or any other banks that would be worth giving a try.

Thanks Kate :rotfl:

  • There must be a problem somewhere, and more than likely its to do with the recent move, but they usually ask for previous addresses anyway, as do experion, so were you on the electoral roll before?

I would ask Barclays why you were refused, as I am sure they have to disclose it.
I believe that I have the strength to make my dreams come true

  • Banks refer to credit reference agencies but rarely do branch staff get told the exact reason for refusal to open an account. It may be an electoral role reason (you were registered at previous address?) or it could be something else that OP was unaware of eg have either of you have had any previous problems with any mobile phone company?
Why do I ask this? This is probably the most common complaint that I get when opening accounts (not with Barclays!) mobile phone companies are ba*****s for putting default notices on your file.I've seen people's mortgage application fail to proceed over an unpaid mobile phone bill of £28!!
Get copies of your credit files from Experian and see what is on there.

When Barclays was my main account I was able to sign a form saying I knew people for at least 2 years, and that was good enough for them to open an account for my friends.

Do you not know someone who could do this for you?

Why cant you get on the electoral roll unitl december?
Most councils operate a rolling registration which can be done every month (usually before 10th or 11th of each month), they will then put you on the electoral roll either next month or the month after that

In Brum there are a couple of months that you can't, maybe other councils are the same:-

The new Register of Electors is published on 1 December each year.

If your name is not on the Register you can complete a Voter Registration Form to have the Register changed. (Except during September and November when new forms will be delivered to every property in the City to complete).

To be included in the Register a person must:

    * be resident at an address on the date of application and
    * be a British, other Commonwealth, Irish citizen or a citizen of another member state of the European Union and
    * be aged over 16 or 17 years old

You will find a Voter Registration Form here. Simply print it out, fill it in and post it,

    or fax the form to : 0121 212 1065,

or e-mail a scanned image of the signed form to elections@birmingham.gov.uk

In most cases these days this is not acceptable.
People can get documents at no cost which will enable them to open an account eg Tax coding letter or Benefits entitlement letter, Council Rent card etc etc
You don't have to have a Passport or Driving Licence.

It is ironic that individuals are made to jump through hoops to open accounts, yet business can get away with murder.

Thousands of holidaymakers duped by fake sites

Whose bank accounts has all this money disappeared into? Who allowed them to open these accounts? Did their bank know their customer? These crooked companies obviously displayed a sign accepting payment by Visa, MasterCard etc etc.

Just thinking aloud, which doesn't solve your problem.

I hope this serves as a warning, always pay for things with a credit card, not cash, cheque or debit card.

Well, you could use a Visa debit card. (Delta/Electron etc)

Same protection as with Visa credit cards.
