Hi all.

I need help finding out what this tree is please as we had it in the garden of our old house and I would love to get one for the garden of where we live now.
All I can remember about it is the blossom/blooms on it were like round balls of small white flowers. IIRC it gave off quite a nice scent when in flower.

I have googled for what seems like weeks in an effort to ID it but with no luck at all.

Here is the best pic I can find of it.....

Thanks so much in advance.

Just a wild guess... maybe a lilac tree?

though the flowers arent in too rounder ball, more like a cone.

Lilac sounds about right...could be a viburnum, they sometimes have a fragrance, could be this one which has pompom type white flowers, google image it..

    Viburnum opulus sterile.

Does it have red or yellow berries? What are the leaves like? what time of year does it flower?

No it's not lilac. Can't think of the name but the blossom is out now and the flowers are round like pompoms.
edit: just saw the last post. Might be the viburnum.

Mock orange? although not all of these are scented.

Could be a large example of the Guelder Rose 'Whitsun Boss' - which has pompoms of flowers instead of flat ones.

Latin name is Viburnum opulus - wiki entry is here. (note that this link only features the flat flowered version)

But the Whitsun Boss version is some sort of variety/cultivar that has these big snowball flowers - there's a flickr pic here.

So if the flowers match the flickr pic and the leaves match the wiki pics I'd go for that.

No, never had any berries on it. Can't remember what the leaves were like, sorry. It flowers this time of year, the pic I posted was taken in May (a few years ago)

Thank you all so much for the replies.

Looking at images of 'Viburnum opulus sterile' it looks like that could be the one. I'll have to ask hubby to take a look for me and see what he thinks :)

Also had a thought that a friend hubby works with, his garden backs onto our old garden. I can text him tomorrow to ask if the tree is still there and if its possible for him to get me a leaf and one of the pompom like blooms, or hopefully a close up pic.

Thanks again & I'll let you know when hubby has confirmed or denied the viburnum :D

    Ooh can I play?

Could it be a shrub rather than a tree? Looks a bit Deutzia-ey to me

Thanks again everyone for your efforts and time taken to help me.
Hubby had a look at the pic I showed him of a 'Viburnum opulus sterile' and agreed that that's the one we used to have!
Now I just have to wait for him to decide if he is moving the shed and then I can get a plant/tree or 2 ordered.

    Thanks again :T
