JSA & Working Full Time

Hi all,

I have a question for a friend who's stuck about reporting someone for benefit fraud. She doesn't have internet access so can't post here herself. Story is she has a friend who's on JSA & signs on. This friend also gets full housing benefit & council tax benefit & has been doing so for close to 4 months now. However, this person also works full time as a live-in carer earning just over £500 weekly & living away from home. She takes a day off when she has to sign on & has continued receiving JSA & full housing/council tax benefit as well. My friend is thinking of reporting her but before she does she wants to know if somehow this won't catch up with the benefit fraudster without her getting involved ie. her employer pays NI contributions for her & tax too so will the HMRC make the link between NI employer contributions and JSA without her having to report it? She doesn't really want to get involved if she can help it but also doesn't think what this woman is doing is fair for other people who genuinely need to be on benefits. Her question is does she need to get involved & if she does will it be handled anonymously? Or, will the law somehow catch up with her without her getting involved? For what it's worth I suggested she report it but she'd like to hear from people in the industry first. Many thanks for any responses.

  • This can be reported anonymously through the National Benefit Fraud Helpline - They won't ask for any contact details at all. The more information she can offer the better i.e. full name of JSA customer and employer details if at all possible. Any fraud can then be stopped very quickly and action taken.

So you think its okay to defraud the benefit system. and to steal money from me and you i might add.

They should throw the book at these immoral, greedy and yes , i will say it ,criminals who are laughing up their sleeves at the rest of us.

Get them shopped but dont expect results straightaway, they are investigated, watched and videoed for some time before calling them in for and interview under caution.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I believe the 0800 number used for reporting is anonymouse, but you can give your name and still remain so as there can be a reward. For me I would do it openly and let the theiving friend know they have been reported for the fraud and watch the little worm squirm.

The benefit people do carry out "data matching" exercises with the N.I and tax people but it would be a mammoth task to check absolutely everyone. The "friend" may well be caught out here but there is no guarantee because of the numbers involved. However, if someone gave them a slight clue then it is obviously quite easy to link the claim and the income received.

I'd rather have no friends than have friends who think stealing is fine tbh! I shudder to think what my children might pick up from them in the way of stealing habits.

To everyone else, many thanks for the input. Printed your responses off & will forward them to my friend.

I would rather have a 'friend' that speaks to me about it, rather than pretend they are my friend and go behind my back - I take it their friendship has ended, or are they just a two faced git.

I knew a girl once who was working in a pub just a few hours a week, but still fraud never less. Someone reported and the inspector told her who it was! turns out it was her ex.

In my opinion your friend should report her, Anyone who defrauds the country should go to jail and get whatever benefit they are getting i.e HB or Child tax credit stopped for 2 years at least. Maybe the money could be given to people who actually deserve it.

Well, we don't always get what we want, do we? I'm sure she'd also rather have a friend who wasn't a thief and didn't think it was ok to do so. Each to his own & all that. I'm sure when you get into that situation you can discuss it with your friend. In the meantime, let others handle it the way they please.
