Tesco Direct...vent....then praise!

Well mixed bag on this one...so here goes!

Bought a Technika TV/Combi online last July, really good 22" great bedroom telly. Suddenly though in the middle of my Futurama "lets watch every episode of the DVD box set run" the DVD player jammed in the middle of an episode and stopped working, and refused to read any of my DVDs. GUTTED! I can't afford the TV license yet (don't even start me on those idiots...) so i only watch DVDs (plus the arial on the house is broken, we can't get a good signal to bother with TV - once that's fixed i'll pay the TV license as I'll be able to watch TV again).

Anyway I rang their electrical helpline...what a long winded process, kept being transferred to the wrong person. The TV is less than 12 months old and still in warranty of course. So after a long winded conversation with someone in India who couldn't understand that it was a combi not just a DVD player or just a TV and accused me of not making sense, she said we could arrange a repair, but this would mean someone collecting from my home the following Monday. My problem was I live on my own, and have just moved here for a new job, i couldn't work at home as i had no internet at the time and i didn't want to ask for a day off at short notice so soon into my new job (i know thats my probelm, but still) I asked if i could take the TV to my local Tesco who have the Tesco Direct desk and if they could send it to the repair centre. She said only in certain circumstances and that I would need a reference number from her, which she said she wasn not willing to give me (I don't know why i had been friendly and polite, i don't mind that it's broke these things happen!). So i gave up in the end and said I would call back.

That's the vent part over!!

So i got home from work put the telly in the back of the car with the email invoice from July and waltzed into Tesco heading for the Direct desk ready for whatever!

THEY WERE BRILLIANT! Even though i forgot the remote and had to go back to get it, they were really helpful - they just gave me my money back on it! So simple! Normally they can be miserable in that Tesco but the guys at the Direct Desk were great, even though my model of TV had gone down in price I got my full money back, they offered to order me another but I decided against it. So thats £165 back onto my credit card (i paid the TV off months ago but moving house meant i had to max it out to buy furniture etc) so now I'm ahead on paying my credit card debts :) I don't need a TV in my bedroom that much and having that money paid off meant i could afford a cheap DVD player for the TV in the livingroom (that telly belongs to the landlord). Even then the same model of TV was about £20 cheaper as well so if i had reordered it i'd have got £20 back! But i'm so skint anyway i was thinking of selling the TV (obviosuly it breaking put a spanner in that lol)

So if you ever get stuck with Tesco Direct on the phone just try talking to someone at the Direct desk if your local Tesco has one (its usually the larger 'Extra' stores that have them) Happy endings all round! :D

I think that you need to remember that even if you don't watch tv, if your equipment (tv, computer etc) has the necessary bits to receive tv channels then you MUST by law have a tv licence. See www. tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/topics/technology-top8/

    From the above link:
If you watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV you must, by law, be covered by a TV Licence, no matter what device you're using.

Therefore, if you're not watching or recording television programmes as they're being shown on TV, you don't need a TV Licence :)

I think the significant bit is that the TV CAN recieve television programs. My friend at uni was using a TV as a computer monitor (not watching tv on it at all) and had to remove the tuner apparatus from the TV to satisfy the TV licencing people.

Oh no you don't (spoken in full panto mode).

You need a TV licence if you "watch or record live television broadcasts" you do not need one if you don't, even if you have the capability to. You can have an arial fitted (ours was there when we moved in), you can watch programmes online on BBC iplayer, ITVplayer etc and you don't have to have a licence. I did my research on this so I'm 100% sure.

Also, you don't have to satisfy the TV licencing police of anything. Worded correctly you can basically tell them to go away and leave you alone and that's the end of it for a couple of years. :o

j9mcl, moromir, please cite the relevant law that states merely owning something that receives television signals means you need a licence.

When you look up the Wireless Telegraphy Act or whatever it's called and discover that Danni is right, kindly stop clogging up the thread with incorrect information.

moromir: TV licensing "people" are not lawyers and are generally wrong.

lol don't worry i made sure i rescued it... nothing worse than missing 1 disc of a box set!!

Also as for the TV license - the aerial on the flat doesn't work. I can't get TV signal for the life of me so until that's fixed TVL can wait. If i cant watch TV then I'm not going to pay for yet. Hopefully my landlord will get it fixed tho because I'm sick of telling TVL the situation... they've sent someone round once to hand deliver me a letter to say they've been round...what's the point of that lol!! :rotfl: Wouldn't let any stranger into my home though unless it's the actual Police - i dont care who they say they are - not because i have anything to hide but because I'm a woman living on her own - sound advice for anyone :)

What if a TV Licence is not needed

The law states that you need to be covered by a TV Licence if you watch or record television programmes, on any device, as they're being shown on TV. This includes TVs, computers, mobile phones, games consoles, digital boxes and DVD/VHS recorders.
You don't need a licence if you don't use any of these devices to watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV - for example, if you use your TV only to watch DVDs or play video games, or you only watch programmes on your computer after they have been shown on TV. If this is the case, please let us know, as this helps us to keep our database up to date and means you won't receive the standard letters we send to unlicensed addresses.

Telling us that you don't need a TV Licence

We've made it even easier for you to tell us that you don't need a TV Licence. Just complete the online declaration form.
If you think that you've already told us you don't need a licence, but would like to check your status with us, please fill in the online check form.

After you send us your declaration

When we receive your declaration, we'll send you a letter to confirm the next steps.
If your declaration is for your home
Once our records have been updated, you won't receive any more letters from us for almost two years. We'll then get in touch to check whether your circumstances have changed. As many people move home or change their circumstances we're not able to put a permanent stop on letters.

You don't have to provide all of this personal information and you can withdraw access to your property to stop them continually knocking on the door. If anyone would like a copy of the letter I sent as a template please let me know, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post it up on here?
