cancelling of holiday

can anyone help me, my friend has booked a holiday to turkey with netflights, flying with thomas cook. Unfortunately his father has took seriously ill and he may have to cancel the holiday incase his father dies while he is on holiday. As it is not with at a travel agents what are his rights. There are six of them and the holiday was £4,500. His travel insurance will not pay out as his father was already ill when he booked the holiday. Will he be able to rebook the flights and hotel for a later date or will he lose the cost of the holiday as he booked his flights and hotel separately with netflights. Could he try to sell the holiday on ebay and change the names on the flights to get some of his money back. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as not only has he got the upset of losing his father in the near future but also the prospect of losing over £4,000.
