London Tube Zone 1 First Visit!

Options
Hi
can anybody give me advice on travelling around London tube when my partner and i and daughter come for a visit in a few weeks time? We are coming down on a fri afternoon and returning mon afternoon. I have no clue as to whether there is a weekend Zone 1 ticket we can buy or any other type offer. Do kids travel free with adults?
Never been before so it all looks rather daunting!
I had a look on the london transport website but it all so confusing!
thanks.

There are Oyster cards and travel cards. Oyster cards are mainly for people who use the London Transport system on a regular basis.

You can get one-day travel cards or one-week travel cards but there would be no advantage for you in getting a one-week travel card.

Bunter, the single fare you are quoting is the "Cash" price, if you use an oyster card it is much much cheaper at £1.80. (If you are travelling outside Zone 1 the oyster price may be more in peak times).

You can find routes and ticket costs here https://www.tfl.gov.uk

P.S A lot of Zone 1 stations are very very close together, it can often be quicker and more enjoyable as you can walk past tourist sites to simply walk instead of using the tube
  • Try Chase Sapphire. I have used it in all my travels and I have been everywhere. You can read about it at the Bleedtravel site.

    Chase Sapphire credit card?

    How does that help?

One advantage of the travelcard that you dont have to worry if you forget to swipe the card anytime

Also, the one day travel card is off peak in the evening unlike the Oyster so that is another reason I use them.

You can have a travel card for other zones as well.

You may not be aware but a travel card will cover bus travel in any zone irrespective of what zones the travel card covers. This is a handy money saver

    But pay more, I presume.

Do you mean that you could travel from Zone 1 to Zone 4 on a bus with a travel card that is nominally only valid for Zone's 1 and 2??

Yes you can travel in any zone on a bus on any zone travel card.

Are you aware that you can add a travel card to an Oyster Card ? I find it much easier to use an Oyster as it's much quicker through the barriers and you can set auto top up etc
