Waiting for surgery, sick pay about to be halved, entitled to any benefits?

Hi there,
Just after a little advice. I've been signed off since January after I popped something in my knee, and my employers said I was better at home than at work as my job involves being on building sites everyday, climbing scaffolds etc, which I can't do on crutches. I work for a local authority, so I have had 6 months on full pay, which expires July 3rd. My surgery is due on the 24th June, with a likely 4 week minimum recovery period until I can go back to work. Is there any benefits I can claim between the 3rd and end of July when I'm due back to try to make up the shortfall?
I've never claimed any benefits before, but have worked full time since leaving university in 2006, and worked part time for 5 years prior to that during my degree and masters.
Thank you
